Close as the presidential race has been for months, it doesn’t take much to make a difference, and Mitt Romney’s debate win this past week appears to have impacted the numbers in the Key Three Swing States – Florida, Ohio and Virginia. It’s too early to say what impact Friday’s government jobs report will have.
New Rasmussen Reports polling taken after the debate finds Romney up two in Florida, up one in Virginia and down one in Ohio. It is virtually impossible for Romney to win the White House without winning at least two of these three states. They remain Toss-Ups in the Rasmussen Reports Electoral College Projections.
Romney remains slightly ahead in Missouri and North Carolina, while Obama has more comfortable leads in New Mexico and Washington State.
Nationally, there are signs of a Romney bounce in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.

President Obama's reelection campaign, rattled by his Wednesday night debate performance, could be in for even worse news. According to knowledgeable sources, a national magazine and a national web site are preparing a blockbuster donor scandal story.
Sources told Secrets that the Obama campaign has been trying to block the story. But a key source said it plans to publish the story Friday or, more likely, Monday.
According to the sources, a taxpayer watchdog group conducted a nine-month investigation into presidential and congressional fundraising and has uncovered thousands of cases of credit card solicitations and donations to Obama and Capitol Hill, allegedly from unsecure accounts, and many from overseas. That might be a violation of federal election laws.

Not long ago, we used stock market-style technical analysis to reveal that the policies implemented during President George W. Bush's tenure in office were most likely responsible for launching the economic recovery that followed the December 2007 recession and that the policies implemented during President Barack H. Obama's tenure in office were most likely responsible for derailing that recovery.
Since technical analysis is such a weak analytical technique, we thought we'd revisit that topic today using a combination of regression analysis and statistical analysis, focusing in on the one data metric that really defines a recession for most people: job layoffs.

Magically and providentially, Obama has enjoyed the largest one-month drop in unemployment since he got elected thanks to the greatest single month of job creation since 1983- all just weeks before ballots hit for his reelection bid.
“The U.S. unemployment rate dropped below 8 percent for the first time since the month President Barack Obama took office,” reports the Associated Press “a surprising lift for both the economy and his re-election hopes in the final weeks of the campaign.”
Yeah; we’re all REAL surprised by this.

"Unbelievable jobs numbers ... these Chicago guys will do anything ... can't debate so change numbers."

High School Teacher Compares Romney To KKK

A Philadelphia high school student was told to leave class when she arrived wearing a Romney T-shirt. The geometry teacher at Charles Carroll High School told 16-year-old Samantha Pawlucy that wearing a Romney shirt is like “wearing a KKK shirt.”
“She told me to take off my shirt and said that she has another one if I need one. And then the teacher asked me, ‘Are your parents Republican?’” recounted Pawlucy to NBC10 in Philadelphia. “I said, ‘I don’t know.’ She said that’s like her wearing a KKK shirt.”

What wasn’t said at tonight’s debate spoke volumes. In an hour and a half focused largely on the economy, not a single mention was made about the importance that marriage plays in combating poverty. Not a single mention of how federal welfare programs can function as poverty traps, especially as the Obama Administration has gutted the work requirements that made welfare reform a success. As the debate turned to focus explicitly on health care reform and the role of government more generally, not a single mention of how the federal government under Obamacare, rather than protecting religious liberty, is actively coercing citizens to violate their consciences. The nuts and bolts of taxation, regulation, Medicare, Social Security, and other domestic policies are important, but so too are the ways that these and other government actions shape culture and interact with civil society. At the end of the day, culture and the institutions of civil society are what make America great. Our government shouldn’t be weakening them.

I grew up in what can only be described as a “liberal” Jewish household in Peoria, Illinois. We went to a “reform” temple where, when we were growing up, keeping kosher and certain other Jewish traditions of the “other” temple in town, the “orthodox” institution, were not observed. It was often suggested that our congregation was so reform that it was actually Unitarian. Amidst all of that liberalism, however, was a strong educational ethic, and we went to Sunday School at Temple Anshai Emeth until we were sophomores in high school. We learned about Jewish traditions—observed or not—and we spent a lot of time learning about another Jewish interest that was a lot more fresh in the 50s and 60s—Israel.
Looking back, at age 60, it’s been a comparatively long time since Adolph Hitler exterminated something over six MILLION of my ancestors and, after World War II—when the extent of what Hitler accomplished in the way of genocide became clear—the concept of “never again” became very real. 5 Reasons Romney Roasted Obama In Debate

1. I’m not surprised Mitt Romney performed well (although he did better than I thought – more on that in a moment) with his proverbial back against the wall. This was a do-or-die moment for a guy that’s been running for the presidency for five years, and saw his bid for the White House slipping away. You’re not as successful in life as Romney has been by not seizing the moment. But what did surprise me is how bad President Obama was. His high point was wishing the First Lady a happy anniversary, and from that point on he looked as if he’d rather be having his toe-nails removed with a dull, rusty blade than on that stage. Obama came across like a police officer who pulls you over for doing 58 in a 55-mph zone. He walks up to your window, shrugs his shoulders, and in a bemused voice says “Yes, it’s lame I’m giving you this ticket right now, and my actions are indefensible, but I’ve got a quota to make so I have to be here.” The lack of tact, polish, and leadership projected by this president was breathtaking. I’m not sure how his disinterested, uncertain presentation doesn’t demoralize Democrats for at least a news cycle. Live by the stagecraft, die by the stagecraft.
2. How bad was it for Obama? He actually lost the question most in his wheelhouse: Romney’s hypocrisy on Romneycare vs. Obamacare. Romney’s position is indefensible, but he did give about the best answer he could. Still, this is a question Obama should own, and he couldn’t even project confident leadership on the most singular “achievement” of his administration (thanks again John Roberts). One moment was a microcosm of the night. During a prolonged discussion about the economy which laid bare the inconvenient truths of Obama’s failed record, Obama actually looked at the moderator and said, “You may want to move on.” Translation: “throw me a fricking bone here – you’re with PBS for Pete’s sake!” On this night he wasn’t a president. Obama was every bit the amateur.

53% See Election As Referendum on Obama’s Agenda

Most voters view this year’s election as a referendum on the Obama presidency rather than one on his Republican challenger’s plans for the future. But independent voters don’t believe that as strongly as GOP voters and Democrats do.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 53% of Likely U.S. Voters consider this election as a referendum on President Obama’s agenda. Only 25% regard it as more about Mitt Romney’s agenda, but nearly as many voters (21%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Obama won the 2008 election over John McCain by a 53% to 46% margin.
While 54% of Republicans and 59% of Democrats think the coming election is about Obama’s agenda, just 44% of voters not affiliated with either of the major parties agree. But that’s not because more unaffiliated voters think Romney’s agenda is the focus but because nearly one-in-three of these voters (30%) is undecided at this stage of the campaign which is more important.
The White House is the prize in this year’s election as far as a plurality of all voters are concerned. Forty-nine percent (49%) would rather have their party control the White House, while 34% put more weight on control of Congress. Sixteen percent (16%) are not sure.
Fifty-three percent (53%) of both Republicans and Democrats agree that they would rather be in charge of the White House. Unaffiliated voters are evenly divided.

Kicked Out of County, Darth Union Strikes Back

All over the country, union leaders are demanding that communities cough up extra cash to help “make teachers whole.” And unions around the country are testing the waters with teachers by asking teachers in budget stricken districts to vote “no confidence” in the community to send a message to taxpayers to cough up cash or else.
Note: This is an important update to a previous story about one county that kicked out it's public employees' union.

In Chicago, the teachers strike was preceded, as it has been elsewhere, by a token “vote of no confidence” circulated by the Chicago Teachers Union, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers- also affectionally known as Darth Union.

The American Left used to champion free expression. We were lectured -- correctly -- that the price of being repulsed by occasional crude talk and art was worth paying. Only that way could Americans ensure our daily right to criticize those with greater power and influence whom we found wrong and objectionable.
When 1950s comedian Lenny Bruce titillated his audiences with the F-word and crude sex talk, liberals came to his defense. They reminded us that vulgar speech is not a crime: The First Amendment was not just designed to protect uplifting expression, but also rarer blasphemous and indecent speech. For liberals, the burning of a flag on campus and the full frontal nudity of Penthouse magazine were also First Amendment issues.
When artist Andres Serrano photographed a crucifix in a jar with his own urine ("Piss Christ"), the avant-garde Left not only protected Serrano's constitutional right to offend millions, but also saw no problem in the U.S. government subsidizing the talentless Serrano's sophomoric obnoxiousness. But the worldview of the Left is self-contradictory. One of its pet doctrines is multiculturalism -- or the idea that non-Western cultures cannot be judged critically by our own inherently biased Western standards.
Female circumcision or honor killings in the Muslim world don't merit our attention in the way that a woman's right to free abortion pills from her Catholic employer does in the West. When it comes to the Middle East, we neither criticize strongly enough the region's sexism, homophobia or racism, nor do we defend without qualification our own notions of free expression as inherently superior to the habitual censorship abroad.

One of the distinctive features of Stratfor's terrorism and security analysis is its focus on the methodology of attacks. Of course, identifying those responsible for an attack is important, especially in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice. But Stratfor believes that analyzing the way in which an attack was conducted is more important because it can prevent future attacks and protect potential victims. It is likewise important to recognize that even if a terrorist is killed or arrested, other groups and individuals share terrorist tactics. Sometimes this comes from direct interaction. For example, many of the Marxist terrorist groups that trained together in South Yemen, Lebanon and Libya in the 1980s employed similar tactics. Otherwise, a tactic's popularity is derived from its effectiveness. Indeed, several terrorist groups adopted airline hijacking in the 1960s and 1970s.

Frontier Communications: Dividend Yield Appears Tempting But What About Valuations?

Shares of Frontier Communications (FTR) have recovered 54% from its 52-week low of $3.06 reached in May. At $4.72 per share, the stock offers a significant dividend yield of 8.3%, and as such the stock has attracted a lot of investors' attentions. However, I remain neutral on the stock even given the strong recovery momentum and the lofty dividend yield. My view is based on the following reasons:
1. The stock appears somewhat expensive on the company's relative financial performance (see table below). Compared with a peer group consisting of Frontier's competitors such as CenturyLink (CTL) and Windstream (WIN), Frontier's revenue and EBITDA growth estimates are substantially lower. Analysts in average predict the firm's revenue and EBITDA to decline by 2-year rates of 4.7% and 3.3% over the current and next fiscal years, compared to the peers' average growth of 4.9% and 7.5%. However, Frontier's EPS is forecasted to grow strongly at a 2-year CAGR of 33.3% and EBITDA margin to expand by 1.4% over the same period. On the profitability side, the company has [....]

Obama Shields Genocidal Muslim From Republican Legislation

Barack Obama has decided to oppose Republican legislation that would deny American aid to any nation that hosts a visit from legendary Muslim murderer and Sudan president Omar al Bashir. Introduced by Congressman Frank Wolf of Virginia, this Amendment to the 2013 Foreign Operations Appropriations bill passed the House in May. Its purpose is to “…send a clear message to the international community that Bashir, the world’s most notorious perpetrator of genocide deserves to be treated as a pariah.” That “clear message” would prevent offending nations from collecting billions in non-humanitarian foreign aid from the United States.
In 2008, the International Criminal Court (ICC) indicted Bashir on 10 counts of murder, genocide, and crimes against humanity for the killing of some 35,000 inhabitants of Western Darfur. This is a rather small percentage of the 2.5 million the Muslim president of Sudan is “credited” with dispatching during his 20 years of rule. Al Bashir is subject to arrest and trial in any nation courageous enough to press ICC charges. Media fraudulent pollsters you’ve been busted. Your fake numbers have been exposed by two very unlikely and probably unwilling sources. Last Friday the Leftist cheerleaders at the Third Way “think tank” made what had to be a very sad announcement for them. They told the world their researchers had found Democrat registration has fallen by 490,000 in just Ohio alone and without going into finer numbers had also declined by significant numbers in other important states. Florida Democrat registration is down 4.9%, Iowa Democrats have lost 9.5% and remember that “this close” swing state of New Hampshire, the one that flipped its entire government just two years ago – Democrat registration is down 19.7%! More than this Third Way also found Republican registration was down only a 10th of the Democrat decline and that Independents (who favor Mitt Romney by 14 points) had grown in numbers.
The full story from Ohio must be chilling for Democrats because 44% of these Democrat registration drops come from the Cleveland (Cuyahoga County) area cutting deeply into their lead over local Republicans. The outbreak of the Arab Spring in 2011 brought significant attention to groups -- known as Islamists -- seeking to establish Islamic states in countries once ruled by secular autocrats. The bulk of this attention went to already established political groups such as the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, which caused consternation in the West when its Freedom and Justice Party won control of both Egypt's parliament and its presidency.
Much less attention was paid to the Brotherhood's principal Islamist competitors, members of the ultraconservative Salafist movement, despite their second-place finish in Egypt's parliamentary elections. Univision has done some outstanding investigative reporting on Operation Fast and Furious, the ill-conceived and disastrously executed gun-smuggling operation that was designed to identify the kingpins of a Mexican firearms-trafficking network but resulted in the transfer of approximately 2,000 high-powered weapons into the hands of dangerous thugs connected with the drug cartels. A recently issued report from the Justice Department’s inspector general criticizes the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona, and senior DOJ officials for their roles in this botched investigation. The report cites “a series of misguided strategies, tactics, errors in judgment, and management failures that permeated ATF Headquarters and the Phoenix Field Division, as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”
President Obama remains in denial about Fast and Furious. When asked about it two weeks ago, he responded: “Well, first of all, I think it’s important to understand that the Fast and Furious program was a field-initiated program, begun under the previous administration. When Eric Holder found out about it, he discontinued it.” This is wrong on two counts. First, Operation Fast and Furious began in the fall of 2009, under the current administration. Second, it ended on December 15, 2010, the day it was discovered that two Fast and Furious weapons were found at the scene where U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was murdered. That was two full months before Attorney General Eric Holder claims to have known about the operation.

This week, sequestration made headlines again, as Lockheed Martin announced its intention to fall in line with the executive branch’s astonishing request that defense contractors wilfully violate the WARN Act. Per its declaration, the firm will defer sending layoff notices made necessary by the sequestration law; and in return they will receive immunity from the consequences, along with a promise that any fines will be picked up by Uncle Sam.
This morning, I spoke to Senator Lindsey Graham about the development.
Graham is deeply concerned about the move, and about the lack of attention it is receiving — within and without Congress. The manouvre is “incredibly disturbing,” he told me. How disturbing? “It is exhibit A in the march toward an imperial presidency.” The “statute is clear,” Graham continued, “the WARN Act is the law of the land.” Here, “we have a White House saying, ‘we don’t care what the law we signed says.’” The OMB analysis — which holds that as the law might change, there is no need for businesses to comply with it — is “absurd on its face,” the senator told me, and the Department of Labor’s advisory opinion “a political move.” It is “patently illegal for the federal government to absorb the financial cost of a private company for not following the law. There never really could be much doubt that the current experiment in competitive global currency debasement would end in anything less than a total war. There was always a chance that one or more of the principal players would snap out of it, change course and save their citizenry from a never ending cycle of devaluation. But developments since September 13, when the U.S. Federal Reserve finally laid all its cards on the table and went "all in" on permanent quantitative easing, indicate that the brainwashing is widely established and will be difficult to break. The vast majority of the world's leading central bankers seem content to walk in lock step down the path of money creation as a means to economic salvation. Never mind that the path will prevent real growth and may ultimately lead off a cliff. The herd is moving. And if it can't be turned, the only thing that one can do is attempt to get out of its way.
The details of the Fed's new plan (which I christened Operation Screw in a previous commentary) are not nearly as important as the philosophy it reveals. The Federal Reserve has already unleashed two huge waves of quantitative easing (purchases of either government securities or mortgage-backed securities) in order to stimulate consumer spending and ignite business activity. But the economy has not responded as hoped. GDP growth has languished below trend, the unemployment rate has stayed north of 8%, and the labor participation rate has fallen to all-time lows. In the meantime, America's fiscal position has grown significantly worse with government debt climbing to unimaginable territory. Despite the lack of results, the conclusion at the Federal Reserve is that the programs were too small and too incremental to be effective. They have determined that something larger, and potentially permanent, would be more likely to do the trick.

I’ve shared evidence from around the world (England, Italy, the United States, and France) and from various states (Illinois, Oregon, Florida,Maryland, and New York) to argue that it is foolish to ignore the Laffer Curve.
Not that it makes any difference. I’m slowly coming the conclusion that my friends on the left will never learn – in large part because they’re more interested in punishing success with class warfare tax policy than they are in collecting extra revenue for government.
But surely there are some statists who are motivated by emotions other than spite, so I refuse to give up. Let’s look at some evidence from Spain to further confirm that high tax rates aren’t necessarily the way to maximize tax revenue (this also is a story showing that tax competition between nations is a good way of disciplining governments that are too greedy, but that’s another issue). U.S. Dithers while World Feasts on New Energy Discoveries

Countries around the world are celebrating new oil and natural gas discoveries that hold the promise of greater prosperity for their citizens. Argentina has just announced a find described by YPF CEO Miguel Galuccio as a “mother rock,” a shale formation that elevates the country to having the third largest shale energy potential behind the United States and China.
The new discovery of a 3.3 billion barrel oil deposit off Norway’s coast cements that nation’s claim to being Europe’s second largest oil producer. In southwest Poland, San Leon Energy PLC drilled into a dolomite formation and discovered oil as it was cleaning out the well. It is in the process of equipping the well to begin production. These discoveries and others in Mexico, Egypt, China and elsewhere in August 2012 likely were accomplished using U.S.-developed technologies and will rely on U.S. drilling procedures. And each one is expected to create jobs, increase government revenues, and result in a higher standard of living for people around the world.

Free checking accounts, once considered common, are becoming increasingly rare as the enormous costs of new regulations hit banks’ bottom lines. According to the just released 2012 Checking Survey by Bankrate, Inc., a publisher of financial information, only 39 percent of banks continue to offer free checking accounts, a sharp decline from the 76 percent of banks that offered free checking in 2009—before enactment of the massive Dodd–Frank financial regulation statute.
The Bankrate study, which analyzed about 500 checking accounts, also found that the average minimum balance required to avoid a monthly fee rose 23 percent in the past year, to $723.02 for non-interest-bearing accounts. The jump in service fees is not surprising, as new regulations cost banks billions of dollars annually. The regulatory culprits include restrictions on overdraft fees and price controls on the fees that banks are allowed to charge retailers to process debit card transactions. The onslaught of hundreds of other Dodd–Frank regulations is also taking a toll. These costs have to be made up somehow.

Beware of Possible Nationwide Phony Bill-Payment

RG&E has been made aware of a possible phony bill-payment scam that may have affected utility customers nationwide. In the interest of customer education and protection, we are providing some details of this scam and safety reminders to all our customers.
- The scam starts with the claim that President Obama will pay customers’ utility bills through a new federal program.
- The information received by RG&E indicates that the scam’s perpetrators attempt to make contact through a variety of means: door-to-door solicitations, telephone calls, mailed or hand-delivered fliers, and through social media sites such as Facebook.
- Customers are allegedly asked to provide personal information, including Social Security or bank account numbers, to participate in the bogus bill-payment program. In return, consumers are given a fake bank routing number that they erroneously believe will pay their utility bills.
- There is no new federal program to pay utility bills that will request Social Security or bank account information. The scammers allegedly use the customers' personal information to steal their identity or empty their bank accounts.
- RG&E urges anyone who may be contacted about such a fraudulent program to immediately break off contact and call the police.

Another Day, Another Default: Postal Service to Miss $5.6 Billion Payment to Treasury

In August, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) failed to pay $5.5 billion due to the Treasury Department to fund health benefits for its retirees. This Sunday, USPS will miss a second payment to the Treasury, this time for $5.6 billion. This second default is no surprise; the USPS just doesn’t have the money to pay and hasn’t for some time. But the reality that the USPS is now a serial defaulter should not be lost on policymakers. Unless real reforms are adopted by Congress, cash shortfalls will continue, leaving U.S. taxpayers on the hook for tens of billions annually for debts the USPS cannot pay.
The present financial disorder is no temporary hiccup for the postal system. It is not simply, as some have suggested, a result of the economic downturn or some sort of pension accounting mistake. The problem is that ever fewer Americans are mailing letters. In the third quarter of 2012, for instance, the number of first-class letters mailed was 12 percent less than the same quarter the previous year. USPS’s loss for the quarter: $5.2 billion.
