The Hat As A Fashion Statement!
During the past century, the English lady's hat has become more formal, if that's even possible! As the hat evolved through the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, it became more than a fashion statement; it became a show of wealth; a show of social status. The upper-class hats of the day were decorated with the family jewels, feathers, precious metals, rare and exotic fabrics.
If you watched any of the royal wedding coverage this morning (Friday, 4/29), you've witnessed some real creations; some better suited to 'the dunce of the class.' One site I found had styles ranging from those seen worn by Queen Elizabeth to those worn at one of Michael Vick's past 'dog fights.' And the money they pay for 'em! Atrocious!! The prices on this site ranged from $17 to $668!! I'm sure the royal wedding invitees paid far more money for far more hideous hats. Hell, I don't pay $17 for a pair'a jeans, although I would pay more than that for a good torque wrench!!
