The Sunday 'Report;' 01/23/2011

What The National Pamphleteers Don't Tell You!
When To Buy, What?!
We scoured the net for advice from financial sites, gadget bloggers, and other sources on the best times to buy particular items, ranging from little goods you can stock up on (aluminum foil) to big-time purchases you can easily overpay for in the wrong season (boats). We threw together all these tips, organized them by time frame, and, through the keen eye of one Jason Fitzpatrick, assembled a timeline of some of the major items to keep in mind throughout the year.  Click on the image below for a [....]

A '2006' Article That's STILL Current!
[...] If manufacturing jobs were declining in China, where manufacturing is growing, then it would not be so bad if they were also declining in the United States, economists and policy people have repeatedly argued. But that is not the case, according to a report commissioned by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  "The renewed increase in China's manufacturing employment that began in 2002 or before is fueled by private corporations and businesses, both foreign funded and domestically own," writes Judith Banister. Manufacturing employment did take a dip in the late 1990s, due mostly to the downsizing of so many unproductive state-owned enterprises.  The number of people working in the manufacturing sector in China is also far higher than most analysts have estimated, according Banister, a consultant working with Javelin Investments in Beijing, China. At least 109 million Chinese are working in the manufacturing sector, far more than [....]

The Constitutional Roots of King's Dream
Nearly 50 years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered one of the greatest speeches in American history. Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, before thousands assembled, King, with his characteristic vigor, shared his dream for America.  While we all know King’s dream—breaking “the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination” to transform “the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood”—many seem to have forgotten its source. [....]
It’s a tired refrain—the Founders were racists, the Declaration didn’t really mean all men, the Constitution is pro-slavery. It’s also a gross distortion of our history—as King well knew when he invoked the promise that “all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” at the heart of the Founding.  The Constitution, contrary to what The New York Times would have you believe, does not classify people according to their race. Free blacks in the North and the South were counted on par with whites for purposes of apportionment. As for enslaved blacks, it was the Southern states that wanted to count them as full persons, thereby inflating their numbers in the House. The 3/5ths compromise was aimed at preventing Southern states from benefiting from their slaves for purposes of representation.  Yet this myth of a racist Founding has unfortunately become deeply entrenched in academia and among the chattering [....]

Rep Buerkle 'Hits The Ground, Running!!'
Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25), freshly sworn-in Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has co-sponsored her first piece of major legislation, a bill to repeal the President’s health care law.   Yesterday (01/05/'11), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor introduced H.R. 2, “Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act.” The act specifically repeals the Affordable Care Act and any health care related provisions in the “Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.”
“I support the repeal and replacement of the Health Care-Related Provisions in the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 because I believe Congress must replace the massive health care law with smaller, constructive reforms that actually address cost and access,” said Buerkle.
Congresswoman Buerkle contends,
“New York State is home to many of the finest hospitals in the world, and the people of the 25th District of New York may be assured of my commitment to ensuring that federal legislation does not undermine [....]

Congressmen and Concealed Carry

January 14, 2011
By Robert Costa

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R., Utah) is well-known for packing heat when he is in his home district. But he’s far from the only congressman who carries a gun. “There are members out there who carry, who don’t talk about it publicly,” he tells us. “It’s for personal-security purposes or their own personal choice.”
When it comes to concealed carry, Chaffetz says, the House is a “reflection of what goes on in America — some people do, some people don’t. And some choose not to talk about it.”  In light of the tragic shooting in Tucson, Chaffetz says he will continue to carry a firearm to most public events back home. But when it comes to bringing a weapon to Washington, he disagrees with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R., Texas), who is pushing to allow members to carry guns in the District of Columbia and on the House floor.  “I don’t think there should be special laws or rules for members of Congress,” [....]

Olbermann Gets His 'Just Desserts!!'
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Keith Olbermann, the outspokenly progressive host of MSNBC’s “Countdown” and bête noire of right-wing talkers, abruptly stepped down from the cable news network Friday night — almost two years before his contract was set to expire.
While he gave no specific reasons, Olbermann told viewers in a farewell message that “there were many occasions, particularly in the last two and a half years, where all that surrounded the show — but never the show itself — was just too much for me.”  Olbermann had locked horns with NBC Universal management on various occasions, most recently last fall when he was briefly suspended for making contributions to the campaigns of Democratic candidates. He complained at the time that the network’s policy on the issue was inconsistent.   He was also a relentless tormentor of other cable personalities, including Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck of Fox News, with both men frequently earning his “Worst Person In The World” honor. News Corp.  (NWS 16.91, +0.56, +3.43%) , the parent of Fox, is also the publisher of this report.
His departure, after eight years on the air, comes just days before cable giant Comcast Corp.  takes over operational control of NBC Universal in the wake of the company’s purchase of a majority stake in it from General Electric Co.   An MSNBC spokesman, cited on the network’s website, said the impending takeover had [....]

Group targeting Glenn Beck funded by Soros

January 17, 2011
An organization leading a crusade demanding Fox News fire host Glenn Beck is backed by philanthropist George Soros and is tied to many of the liberal activists that Beck routinely excoriates on his highly rated program, WND has learned.   Jewish Funds for Justice, or JFSJ, a charity that campaigns for social change, delivered a petition with 10,000 signatures to Fox News this past week in protest of a program in which Beck specifically targeted Soros, calling the businessman the “puppet master.” JFSJ deemed the show anti-Semitic.  During the program, Beck highlighted nine people of the 20th century who contributed to what he called “the era of the big lie.” All nine of those figures were Jewish, including psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, columnist Walter Lippman and Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania.
JFSJ is funded by Soros’ Open Society Institute.
In 2009, the Open Society provided a $150,000 grant to the JFSJ and its associated group, the Funder’s Collaborative on Youth Organizing.  In 2010, the Open Society provided a $200,000 grant to last a period of two years.  JFSJ says it is seeking to create a just, fair and compassionate America, with social and economic [....]

Henry Ford's 'plastic hemp car' from 1941

We might think that our ethanol and biodiesel "flex-fuel" systems are all very cutting edge, but biofuel development is of course nothing new. Way back in the 1930's, Henry Ford was hard at work in the alt-fuels sector, and in 1941 he constructed a hemp-fueled and hemp-bodied prototype car. The "plastic" body panels were composed of 70% cellulose fibers, including industrial hemp, mixed with More..a resin binder, and apparently they were pretty sturdy: check out this video, in which a guy beats on the trunk with an axe and fails to leave a mark. Industrial hemp won't make you high, kids, but its association with marijuana has historically been a major legal stumbling block.

Administration Will Cut Border Patrol Deployed on U.S-Mexico Border

The Border Patrol confirmed this week that it is planning for a net decrease of 384 agents on the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal 2010, which begins on October 1.

By Terence P. Jeffrey
(CNSNews.com) - Even though the Border Patrol now reports that almost 1,300 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border is not under effective control, and the Department of Justice says that vast stretches of the border are “easily breached,” and the Government Accountability Office has revealed that three persons “linked to terrorism” and 530 aliens from “special interest countries” were intercepted at Border Patrol checkpoints last year, the administration is nonetheless now planning to decrease the number of Border Patrol agents deployed on the U.S.-Mexico border.  Border Patrol Director of Media Relations Lloyd Easterling confirmed this week--as I first reported in my column yesterday--that his agency is planning for a net decrease of 384 agents on the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal 2010, which begins on October 1.
A Department of Homeland Security annual performance review updated by the Obama administration on May 7 said the Border Patrol “plans to move several hundred Agents from the Southwest Border to the Northern Border to meet the FY 2010 staffing requirements, with only a small [....]
