Sometimes, science does things just to see if it is possible. This seems to be one of those times. While I really wanted to have my long promised flying car by now, this is pretty cool too.
Abstract
The design of artificial molecular machines1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 often takes inspiration from macroscopic machines13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. However, the parallels between the two systems are often only superficial, because most molecular machines are governed by quantum processes.
Previously, rotary molecular motors3 powered by light4, 5, 6 and chemical7, 8, 9, 10, 11 energy have been developed. In electrically driven motors, tunnelling electrons from the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope have been used to drive the rotation of a simple rotor12 in a single direction and to move a four-wheeled molecule across a surface13. Here, we show that a stand-alone molecular motor adsorbed on a gold surface can be made to rotate in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction by selective inelastic electron tunnelling through different subunits of the motor. Our motor is composed of a tripodal stator for vertical positioning, a five-arm rotor for controlled rotations, and a ruthenium atomic ball bearing connecting the static and rotational parts. The directional rotation arises from sawtooth-like rotational potentials, which are solely determined by the internal molecular structure and are independent of the surface adsorption site.

Common ground is hard to come by in Washington these days, but everyone it seems, hates tax "loopholes." Democrats claim they rob the government of revenue and benefit the rich. Republicans say tax loopholes distort free markets by letting the government pick winners and losers, thereby potentially indroducing artificial and undesirable incentives.
Indeed, during the 2012 presidential race, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan attacked tax loopholes for the rich, declaring that he and Gov. Mitt Romney wanted to “get rid of special interest loopholes and deductions that are uniquely enjoyed by the wealthy." So what about the so-called “carried interest tax loophole”? That’s the provision that allows hedge fund managers and investment firm executives to have the profits from the sale of a company taxed at the capital gains rate (soon likely to rise to 20%) instead of the traditional income tax rate (soon likely to jump to 39.6% for top earners).

On Dec. 18, the U.S. State Department's Accountability Review Board released an unclassified version of its investigation into the Sept. 12 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack, so the report was widely anticipated by the public and by government officials alike.
Four senior State Department officials have been reassigned to other duties since the report's release. Among them were the assistant secretary of state for diplomatic security; two of his deputy assistant secretaries, including the director of the Diplomatic Security Service, the department's most senior special agent; and the deputy assistant secretary responsible for Libya in the State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.
The highly critical report and the subsequent personnel reassignments are not simply a low watermark for the State Department; rather, the events following the attack signify another phase in the diplomatic security funding cycle. The new phase will bring about a financial windfall for the State Department security budgets, but increased funding alone will not prevent future attacks from occurring. Jeffrey Immelt, the modern version of Jim Jett’s brother and Chief Executive Officer of General Electric, should be fired.
Actually, if it’s possible, he should be fired twice: once because he’s a scoundrel and another time because he’s a fool.
As a fool and as a scoundrel, the guy has wonderful timing; timing that can only be attributed to the vast Left-Wing conspiracy that aims to convince Americans that the liberals behind public microphones are not just foolish, but also scoundrelous as well. Immelt, who heads Obama’s misnamed Jobs Council, said on TV recently that state run communism in China “works.”
The obvious inference is that the USA should try some communism too.

During 2012, virtually every aspect of American life, from caloric intake to dishwasher efficiency, was subjected to government meddling. Most of these rules increase the cost of living, others hinder job creation, and many erode freedom. Not all regulations are unwarranted, of course, but increasingly, the rules imposed by the government have less to do with health and safety and more to do with whether government or individuals get to make basic pocketbook and lifestyle decisions that affect them. And it is not just the regulators who are to blame. Congress writes laws that give unelected bureaucrats the broad powers they wield.

In a great many cases, the agencies do not even consider costs when crafting new regulations. For example, the Government Accountability Office, in a report released last week, found that the agencies implementing the Dodd–Frank financial regulation law did not meet the government’s own standards for regulatory analyses. Nor did they evaluate alternatives to regulation.[1]

Barack Obama’s answer to the public clamoring for information about the attack on the Benghazi consulate and CIA safe house was the so-called “Benghazi Accountability Report,” released on December 17.
This “accountability” report didn’t actually find anyone accountable. The one person supposedly at fault for lax security at the consulate,Assistant Secretary of State Eric Boswell,who supposedly resigned,didn’t actually resign. He was just given a different desk.
Barack Obama,as was expected,simply rearranged the deck chairs on the Titanic.
The Accountability Report doesn’t actually address the whole business about the Obama administration blaming an anti-Muslim YouTube video for two weeks,or why Obama failed to send anyone to help the Americans under attack except a seven-man CIA team eight hours after the attack began which,as expected,was too little,too late.
But the Benghazi Accountability Report let the cat out of the bag—probably inadvertently—about some other skeletons in Barack Obama’s Libyan closet.

How much money will Uncle Sam allow you to keep from your paycheck in 2013 in the form of federal income taxes?
Thanks to the so-called "fiscal cliff" standoff in Washington D.C., the answer, for now, is exactly the same as you would have taken home in 2012. That fact will hold true even if the reported deal struck and passed in the U.S. Senate early on 1 January 2013 is passed by the House of Representatives later in the day.
That's because President Obama has previously directed the IRS to not issue any change in the directions it provides for withholding income taxes from individual paychecks to the nation's employers until a deal is finalized. As a result, the rules that the IRS issued for employer withholding taxes in 2012 will continue to remain in force, at least for the time being.
And because those same withholding tax rates, income thresholds, personal exemptions and allowances will continue to apply into 2013, the amount of money that the U.S. federal government will take from your paycheck represents roughly a 2.6% increase over what it would otherwise be, thanks to the return of bracket creep for the first time in nearly 30 years.
That means that 2013 will mark the first time since 1984 that the corrosive effect of inflation upon personal income will be allowed to affect the amount of taxes withheld [....]

Peas are all the rage when it comes to talking about the country’s fiscal woes.
You might remember that in July of 2011, when fighting over the debt ceiling, president Obama- right before he left for his 17th vacation at Martha’s Vineyard that year- complained about congressional inaction by saying that’s it time for the country “to eat its peas.”

"I've been hearing from my Republican friends for some time it is a moral imperative to tackle our debt and deficits in a serious way," Mr. Obama said. "What I've said to them is, let's go."
The president said today he would not accept a smaller, short-term deal. "We might as well do it now," he said. "Pull off the band aid. Eat our peas."
Of course the president and Congress refused to eat their peas then, preferring to put it off until after the presidential election. There were far too many [....]

Sometimes there is so much stupid going on in the world that you have to just stop and take stock of it all.
Al Gore sells Current TV to Al Jazeera.
The Americans who owned the anti-American network Current TV soon will be replaced as owners by foreigners who operate the anti-American network Al Jazeera. I doubt any of the 40,000 regular Current TV viewers would have noticed had the news not gone public. Of course, most of them spend their time writing diaries at the DailyKos, when not being yelled at by their moms to clean their rooms. But the big winner in all this is former Vice-President Al Gore. The private-jet-flying, limo-riding, mansion-heating/air-conditioning bearded Pope of the Holy Church of Global Warming stands to pocket $100 million in dirty oil money from the deal. Unfortunately for him, in spite of his scrambling to do so, he wasn’t able to seal the deal before the end of 2012 and will have to pay the higher tax rates he tried desperately to avoid. Seems like Al Gore is looking to win the Nobel Prize in hypocrisy.
Sadly, the current line-up of Current TV, Jennifer Granholm, Eliot Spitzer, The Young Turks, Joy Behar, etc., are not expected to be retained when the new owners take over. Even terrorists have some standards.
The Dud Heard ‘Round the World
Have you heard about the resignation and/or ouster of Speaker of the House John Boehner? No? That’s so weird. It was the biggest story that wasn’t. Journalists, bloggers and activists took wishful thinking to exciting new levels when they assured their readers and followers they had the details, the inside dope on how the Republican caucus had had enough and planned a coup. Only it didn’t.
The “leader” of this fool’s caucus was a guy named Ron Meyer Jr., who works for something called [....]
