Today, I didn't. Bob Lonsberry's column today is about how the "Clown Prince" lies, particularly about 'Big Oil' with the intention of inflaming the serfs, his 'subjects.' I also took the daily poll:

And when I discuss my work on the economic impact of government spending, I often get the same reaction. This is why it’s important that a growing number of establishment outfits are slowly but surely coming around to the same point of view. The European Central Bank published a study showing
“…a significant negative effect of the size of government on growth.”
A study by two Harvard economists found that
“large adjustments in fiscal policy, if based on well-targeted spending cuts, have often led to expansions.”
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development noted in recent research that welfare programs are economically destructive because they lure people into dependency because
“net disposable income would increase despite putting in fewer hours.”
A study from the International Monetary Fund concluded that
“Cuts to pension and health entitlements had the most beneficial effect on economic growth.”
This is remarkable. It’s beginning to look like the entire world has figured out that there’s an inverse relationship between big government and economic performance. That’s an exaggeration, of course. There are still holdouts pushing for more statism [....]

Bishops Reject White House’s New Plan on Contraception

The nation’s Roman Catholic bishops have rejected a compromise on birth control coverage that President Obama offered on Friday and said they would continue to fight the president’s plan to find a way for employees of Catholic hospitals, universities and service agencies to receive free contraceptive coverage in their health insurance plans, without direct involvement or financing from the institutions.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops — which has led the opposition to the plan — said in a statement late Friday that the solution offered by the White House to quell a political furor was “unacceptable and must be corrected” because it still infringed on the religious liberty and conscience of Catholics. Canadian PM courts China after Obama's Keystone Pipeline Rejection

February 11, 2012 About three weeks ago, Barack Obama nixed the Keystone XL pipeline that would have transported 900,000 barrels of oil per day from the Canadian tar sands to the gulf coast region of the U.S. The pipeline project would also create 20,000 direct jobs and potentially hundreds of thousands of indirect jobs according to economic analysis. Spurned by Obama's rejection, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper stated that if Canada's next door neighbor and close ally didn't want Canada's oil, then he'd pursue other markets to "diversify" the market for Canada's natural resources. It didn't take him long. Harper was in Beijing this week where he "pledged closer trade ties with China" during talks with Premier Wen Jiabao. Finding alternative markets for its natural resources has become a top priority for Canada, which today sells nearly all of its oil to the U.S., but sees environmental regulations from Washington as an increasing impediment [....]

The latest project of Hyatt hotel heir Anthony Pritzker is a 49,300-square-foot building designed by an architecture firm in Paris. It involves a small army of specialized consultants and boasts amenities like a bowling alley, hairdressing area and gym. The project, in the hills above Los Angeles, isn't a luxury hotel—it's a private home for Mr. Pritzker and his family.
Four years into the housing downturn, what little new-home construction remains is focused on downsized living. According to the Census Bureau, the average size of a newly completed single-family home peaked in 2007 at 2,521 square feet, capping nearly three decades of growth, falling to 2,392 square feet in 2010. Then there are the exceptions, a small cadre of homeowners who are currently building mansions that are 10 times that size. Interviews with the small pool of luxury builders who handle such projects, and a perusal of permits in wealthy areas including parts of Connecticut and California, suggests that for some of the mega-wealthy, big is back.
When 50,000 Square Feet Isn't Enough

When lead-footed drivers get snagged and ticketed, their downfall might have been passing a speed trap where a cop was using radar or a laser, or maybe the driver passed a speed camera. However, as technology improves traffic enforcement, it is also progressing on the side of the speeder. Now joining the radar detector is crowd-sourced reporting of speed traps, a virtual warning system using the Internet and a mobile app.
This list of the 10 most-active cities for speed traps was compiled by Trapster.com, a community platform accessed online and via smartphone app, that alerts drivers to traps, hazards and other traffic issues nearby.
Trapster"s list is drawn from the reports of its base of nearly 15 million users. In addition to speed traps and enforcement cameras, "activity" can include road hazards, traffic, school zones, construction zones and locations of roadkill. However, Sean Farrell, product manager for Trapster, says that over 50 percent of the activity reported on Trapster are "live police" speed traps. For each of the following 10 most-active cities, Trapster users entered 3,000 to 4,000 reports in a recent 30-day period.

Bill on citizenship inquiries advances

Legislation to require citizenship inquiries of everyone arrested in Virginia is on its way to the House of Delegates, where it is expected to pass easily. The House Courts of Justice Committee on Friday advanced two similar bills aimed at identifying illegal immigrants accused of committing crimes. House Bill 1060, the broader of the two, would instruct law-enforcement officers to make citizenship inquiries of everyone arrested for any offense. It also requires officers finding "probable cause" to believe that the person is not legally present in the U.S. to inform the judicial officer who would decide whether to grant bail.
Sponsored by Del. Richard L. Anderson, R-Prince William, the bill is based on existing law in Prince William County, which Anderson says has led to a stop in violent crimes and 4,300 criminal illegal immigrants being handed over to federal authorities. While tuition bills continue to skyrocket, a small but growing number of private colleges and universities are bucking the trend and going on sale. At least six colleges announced plans to reduce tuition costs in the upcoming school year. Many of these schools say lower-cost higher-education will attract more students from middle-income families those with incomes too high to qualify for free federal financial aid, but not high enough to pay for college costs without going deep into debt. "We are hoping to recruit more students from that group than in the past," says Edwin Welch, president of University of Charleston, in West Virginia, which is slashing tuition by 22%. Others are looking to lure students away from nearby colleges that up to now have been more affordable, says Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org, which tracks financial aid issues.

On the surface, you can't beat free-to-play games. After all, having access to titles people used to pay $15 a month for without ever having to open your wallet? It sounds too good to be true. Unfortunately, it often is.
While some free-to-play games live up to the billing, too many take advantage of our inherent desire to save a buck. Instead of paying cash up front (whether it's $60 for a retail game or $1 for an app), you'll often end up paying much, much more on the back end. Or worse, you'll wind up playing a cut-rate version of the game while others have all the bells and whistles. After all, you get what you pay for. Here are a few things to watch out for:

Firstly, Deserves re-election: A Quinnipiac University poll from early October indicated that 54% of the respondents said the "Clown Prince" didn't deserve re-election. Normally, the 'deserves' questions generate a substantial number of 'undecideds;' with the "Clown Prince," the 'undecideds' only recorded 4%! This indicates that the '54% number' is good, not likely to change much going forward.
Secondly, Perceptions of accomplishments: The republicRAT campaign ads will ask-'What has the "Clown Prince" actually accomplished?!?' Most presidents are graded on their 'salad days,' the first nine-months of their term. The "Clown Prince's" only positive accomplishment--if you can call legislation passed against the wishes of 64% of the populus, a positive--is owe-bamaKare! The owe-bamacRATic hierarcy will feebly promote the perceived accomplishments of jobs created or saved; reduced debt(?); taxes remaining low; reformed Wall Street as well as the aforementioned owe-bamaKare. Since the evolution of the "Tea Party" movement, the American public; the American taxpayer has far greater insight into the workings of government at all levels, the "pluses'n'minuses" of the politicians involved. In (my) conclusion, "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist's" record can't even be doctored enough to convince a majority of the voting public to keep him in office. The actions of the union thuggery, the New Black Panthers, the "Purple People Beaters (SEIU)"--while intimidating--will not be enough to counteract the quiet perserverence of the "Tea Party" movement. "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist"--all possible good intentions, aside--was given bad advice, ineffectual guidance early on in his rule. Immediately, he acted like the Second Coming of Christ.... er.... in his case, Allah, which turned off most of the population, hampering his attempts to rule by fiat, when he was unable to get any substantive legislation through the Congress. Shale gas drives US energy group mergers

October 26, 2011The total value of US oil and gas mergers and acquisitions increased 135 per cent to $48.8bn during the third quarter of 2011, driven by a long-term bet on shale gas, according to a new study. The study, to be released on Wednesday by PwC, the consultancy, counted 46 deals with values greater than $50m – the minimum threshold to be included in the study – and was up from $20.8bn during the same period in 2010. Thirteen of the deals, totalling $22.6bn, or 46 per cent of deal value, were related to shale – the geologic formation the industry has only been able to economically extract gas and oil from in recent years. Among them were four transactions in the Marcellus Shale, totalling $3.6bn, and four in the Utica Shale, totalling $3.1bn.
Given the high gas content in these formations, the deals revealed continued interest in natural gas despite the drop in prices to about $4 per million British thermal units from a record of $13.69 per mBtu in 2008. “Shale gas assets continue to attract vast interest from oil and gas companies, with five of the top 10 largest deals in the third quarter involving shale plays,” said Steve Haffner, partner in PwC’s energy practice. Conventional wisdom is that government must run the schools. But government monopolies don't do anything well. They fail because they have no real competition. Yet competition is what gives us better phones, movies, cars -- everything that's good. If governments produced cars, we'd have terrible cars. Actually, governments once did produce cars. The Soviet bloc puts its best engineers to work and came up with the Yugo, the Volga and the Trabant. The Trabant was the best -- the pride of the Eastern Bloc. It was produced by actual German engineers -- known for their brilliance. Yet even the Trabant was a terrible car. Drivers had to put the oil and gas in separately and then shake the car to mix them. Trabants broke down and spewed pollution. When government runs things, consumers suffer. Our school system is like the Trabant. Economist Milton Friedman understood this before the rest of us did. In 1955, he proposed school vouchers. Steve Jobs of Apple (AAPL) stated in his just released biography by Walter Isaacson that “television” is another consumer product area that he wanted to revolutionize. He goes on to say that "I'd like to create an integrated television set. It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud ... It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine." Given that, you have to believe that Apple has initiated a highly secret internal project to move this idea forward. "After a heavy rainstorm go outside and walk around your home. Check within five feet of the house to make sure you don't see large puddles...Avoid having any water soaking the ground right next to your house." For foundation repair, it can cost $400-$800 to repair simple, tiny cracks in the foundation. Moderate damage can run as high as $8000-$30,000 to repair, according to Costhelper.com.

Occupy Wall Street and Entrepreneur Investment

Reading many blogs from various VC’s and entrepreneurs, I get the impression that they are on the side of Occupy Wall Street. Or, if they aren’t on their side totally, they are cheering for them.
Here is what I don’t understand. The VC and entrepreneurial community wants to fund businesses that are disruptive, make things horizontal, and decentralized. Currently, many of the hottest businesses take the power from dominant players and put it into the hands of individuals. There is huge power in catering to individual choice, and individual consumers can exert a great amount of influence over the profitability of a company. Freedom is unleashed and the power of that freedom increases productivity and profit. Individual choice benefits the masses. Yet, when it comes to government, these same VC’s and entrepreneurs contribute, and actively campaign for Democrats. Democrats are the antithesis of where most of them try and earn a return on their investment dollars. Democrats are for huge centrally planned bureaucracies that always screw things up and cater to the middle, not the individual. Freedom is limited and restrained. Certain favored individuals get what they want, but the masses are left in the lurch.
The logic doesn’t add up.
Here is a different way to put it. If you are a VC that supports Occupy Wall Street, don’t invest one new dollar in Silicon Valley or Boston or Austin. They are the 1%. Invest in Detroit or Cleveland. Aren’t they the 99%? If you happen to be fortunate enough to earn a return, donate most of the profit to charity. That’s what Occupy Wall Street is telling everyone, or at least that’s what I am hearing.
Just a point of information.
None of the Tea Parties turned into mobs where thugs were arrested for drugs, rape, beatings, and public indecency. As a matter of fact, in a lot of places the streets and parks they marched in were cleaner than when the Tea Party first set foot there. Occupy Wall Street is a useless leftist movement for the most part. For the people that are truly frustrated, I empathize. But what OWS stands for won’t get you what you want. It’s tough [....]

DES PLAINES, Ill. (TheStreet) --The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation on Friday shuttered All American Bank of Des Plaines, bringing this year's total number of bank failures to 85. All American Bank had $37.8 million in total assets and $33.4 million in deposits when it failed.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was named receiver and sold the failed institution to International Bank of Chicago. The failed bank's office was set to reopen during normal business hours as a branch of International Bank of Chicago. Shale gas drives US energy group mergers

October 26, 2011The total value of US oil and gas mergers and acquisitions increased 135 per cent to $48.8bn during the third quarter of 2011, driven by a long-term bet on shale gas, according to a new study. The study, to be released on Wednesday by PwC, the consultancy, counted 46 deals with values greater than $50m – the minimum threshold to be included in the study – and was up from $20.8bn during the same period in 2010. Thirteen of the deals, totalling $22.6bn, or 46 per cent of deal value, were related to shale – the geologic formation the industry has only been able to economically extract gas and oil from in recent years. Among them were four transactions in the Marcellus Shale, totalling $3.6bn, and four in the Utica Shale, totalling $3.1bn.
Given the high gas content in these formations, the deals revealed continued interest in natural gas despite the drop in prices to about $4 per million British thermal units from a record of $13.69 per mBtu in 2008. “Shale gas assets continue to attract vast interest from oil and gas companies, with five of the top 10 largest deals in the third quarter involving shale plays,” said Steve Haffner, partner in PwC’s energy practice. For years, American education from kindergarten through high school has been a virtual government monopoly.
Conventional wisdom is that government must run the schools. But government monopolies don't do anything well. They fail because they have no real competition. Yet competition is what gives us better phones, movies, cars -- everything that's good. If governments produced cars, we'd have terrible cars. Actually, governments once did produce cars. The Soviet bloc puts its best engineers to work and came up with the Yugo, the Volga and the Trabant. The Trabant was the best -- the pride of the Eastern Bloc. It was produced by actual German engineers -- known for their brilliance. Yet even the Trabant was a terrible car. Drivers had to put the oil and gas in separately and then shake the car to mix them. Trabants broke down and spewed pollution. When government runs things, consumers suffer. Our school system is like the Trabant. Economist Milton Friedman understood this before the rest of us did. In 1955, he proposed school vouchers. His plan didn't call for separating school and state -- unfortunately -- but instead sought a second-best fix: Give a voucher to the family, and let it choose which school -- government-run or private -- their child will attend. Steve Jobs of Apple (AAPL) stated in his just released biography by Walter Isaacson that “television” is another consumer product area that he wanted to revolutionize. He goes on to say that "I'd like to create an integrated television set. It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud ... It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine." Given that, you have to believe that Apple has initiated a highly secret internal project to move this idea forward. The only question is how far downstream are they?
Monday morning Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray who has also been speculating on this idea for some time, is saying that Apple is already building prototype TV sets and has a supply chain starting up in Asia. We spoke with home improvement specialist Ron Hazelton for his preventative home maintenance checklist, which he says can save the average owner over at least $100,000 in repairs over the years.
Inspect Your Foundation
Foundation repair can cost as much as $25,000, so Hazelton's first bit of advice is to survey the exterior base of your home for any cracks, which may have been caused by rainwater mixing with soil. "When soil meets water, the soil tends to expand like a sponge and exert a great deal of pressure on a home's foundation and basement walls," says Hazelton. "After a heavy rainstorm go outside and walk around your home. Check within five feet of the house to make sure you don't see large puddles...Avoid having any water soaking the ground right next to your house." For foundation repair, it can cost $400-$800 to repair simple, tiny cracks in the foundation. Moderate damage can run as high as $8000-$30,000 to repair, according to Costhelper.com.

Romney is still the GOP presidential contender who voters consider most qualified to be president, although he falls short of the number who feel that way about President Obama. But most GOP voters think all four top hopefuls for their party’s presidential nomination have what it takes, although they’re a little less sure about Herman Cain. The Republican numbers tell an interesting story. Cain has surged to challenge Romney in recent weeks as Texas Governor Rick Perry has stumbled. But our latest numbers show that 61% of GOP voters now think Perry is qualified to be president, up from 52% in late September and virtually tying the number who feel that way about Romney. In that same period, however, the number of Republicans who think Cain is qualified to be president as risen only marginally from 49% to 52%. Occupy Wall Street and Entrepreneur Investment

Reading many blogs from various VC’s and entrepreneurs, I get the impression that they are on the side of Occupy Wall Street. Or, if they aren’t on their side totally, they are cheering for them.
Here is what I don’t understand. The VC and entrepreneurial community wants to fund businesses that are disruptive, make things horizontal, and decentralized. Currently, many of the hottest businesses take the power from dominant players and put it into the hands of individuals. There is huge power in catering to individual choice, and individual consumers can exert a great amount of influence over the profitability of a company. Freedom is unleashed and the power of that freedom increases productivity and profit. Individual choice benefits the masses. Yet, when it comes to government, these same VC’s and entrepreneurs contribute, and actively campaign for Democrats. Democrats are the antithesis of where most of them try and earn a return on their investment dollars. Democrats are for huge centrally planned bureaucracies that always screw things up and cater to the middle, not the individual. Freedom is limited and restrained. Certain favored individuals get what they want, but the masses are left in the lurch.
The logic doesn’t add up.
Here is a different way to put it. If you are a VC that supports Occupy Wall Street, don’t invest one new dollar in Silicon Valley or Boston or Austin. They are the 1%. Invest in Detroit or Cleveland. Aren’t they the 99%? If you happen to be fortunate enough to earn a return, donate most of the profit to charity. That’s what Occupy Wall Street is telling everyone, or at least that’s what I am hearing.
Just a point of information.
None of the Tea Parties turned into mobs where thugs were arrested for drugs, rape, beatings, and public indecency. As a matter of fact, in a lot of places the streets and parks they marched in were cleaner than when the Tea Party first set foot there. Occupy Wall Street is a useless leftist movement for the most part. For the people that are truly frustrated, I empathize. But what OWS stands for won’t get you what you want. It’s tough [....]
