This'n'That; September Fourth #1; Differences

No Matter Whom You Prefer....
....there are similarities and differences between the two candidates for election, re-election.  As my 'constitutionalist' proclivities demand, I show more defference toward the republicRATic candidate; more distain toward the obamacRATic candidate, that's just the way it is.
One similarity is both candidates seem to forget that any and all presidents are--by oath of office--required
"....to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
It's my opinion that the word 'preserve' in the oath is defined as adhering to the basic rights and demands of the document.  Each time a president--of any party--sits to sign a piece of legislation into law, the first phrase that should come to his (or her) mind is:
"Where in the Constitution is this authorized?"
Another similarity is both candidates are--or have, in the past--campaigning as ideological moderates, middle-of-the-roaders.  In obama's case--as America's current ruler--how he campaigned in 2008 was certainly indicative of his future governance.  Sometime, soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Mr obama took a hard-left turn, swerving--willy-nilly--into national socialism.  Mr Romney--in my view--is campaigning as a middle-of-the-roader, not a place the country needs him to be.  To fix the national economy, to put many more Americans to work and back to work, the country would fare far better with having a president who will govern from a position farther to the right.  He doesn't have to be as far right as I am; just not a moderate!!
If we're to believe Mr Romney's rhetoric and Mr obama's actions, one will have the nation's best interests at heart, the other will have his own narcissistic personal and political gains at heart.  Who becomes the victor wholly depends on the numbers that support each, how much they believe of the rhetoric and the actions.  We have the Romney record as Governor of Massachusetts as well as the obama record as Ruler of the United States with which to guide our decisions, neither of which is a glowing recommendation for advancement.  Rather than take several pages to illustrate the pros and cons of their individual methods of governance, the voter might glean more insight by reviewing each party's 2012 campaign platform.
The obamacRATic's party platform, with the slogan "Moving America Forward," thus:

Rebuilding Middle Class Security

1.  Putting Americans Back to Work
2.  The Middle Class Bargain
3.  Cutting Waste, Reducing the Deficit, Asking All to Pay Their Fair Share
4.  Economy Built to Last

America Works When Everyone Plays by the Same Rules
1.  Wall Street Reform
2.  21st Century Government: Transparent and Accountable
3.  Lobbying Reform and Campaign Finance Reform

Greater Together
1.  Strengthening the American Community
2.  Protecting Rights and Freedoms
3.  Ensuring Safety and Quality of Life

Stronger in the World, Safer and More Secure At Home
1.  Responsibly Ending the War in Iraq
2.  Disrupting, Dismantling, and Defeating Al-Qaeda
3.  Responsibly Ending the War in Afghanistan
4.  Preventing the Spread and Use of Nuclear Weapons
5.  Countering Emerging Threats
6.  Strengthening Alliances, Expanding Partnerships, and Reinvigorating International Institutions
7.  Promoting Global Prosperity and Development
8.  Maintaining the Strongest Military in the World
9.  Advancing Universal Values

The republicRATic's party platform with the slogan "We Believe In America," thus:   1.  Restoring the American Dream: Rebuilding    the Economy   and Creating Jobs
2.  We The People: A Restoration of Constitutional Government
3.  America’s Natural Resources: Energy, Agriculture and the Environment
4.  Reforming Government to Serve the People
5.  Renewing American Values to Build Healthy Families, Great Schools and Safe Neighborhoods
6.  American Exceptionalism
With that, we--both you and I--have a lot of reading to do; a lot of mental digesting to do!

This'n'That; April Eleventh #1; ROMNEY Cabinet

Does Governor Christie Warrant A Spot?!?
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is certainly outspoken at times.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is certainly bombastic at times.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is certainly conservative all the time.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is certainly 'smaller government' all the time.
On Tuesday, April tenth,  New Jersey Governor Chris Christie correctly described the largest--and growing--contingent of American society:  The WelfareRAT!!  Speaking at the George W. Bush Presidential Center, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is quoted:
"....the country is in danger of becoming a 'paternalistic entitlement society' where people sit on the couch 'waiting for the next government check.'"
Another 'Christie-ism' describing the 'least optimistic period he's ever seen for the nation,' from the same address:
"It's because the government's now telling them, stop dreaming, stop striving, we'll take care of you.  We're turning into a paternalistic entitlement society.  That will not just bankrupt us financially, it will bankrupt us morally."
NOTEPresident Bush (43) also spoke at the same conference, laying out the basis of his keynote topic: "Tax Policy for 4% Growth," aimed at the current Congress.  In keeping with his post-presidential policy of not commenting on the owe-bama Regime's public policy, President Bush (43) voiced approval of- and support for- "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist's" 'soak-the-rich' class-warfare tax policy--the "Buffett Rule."
In conclusion, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has earned a seat in the upcoming President Mitt Romney administration, just what that should be is anyone's guess.  While I don't think his basic nature is conducive to being Secretary of State, he may be a 'good fit' as Secretary of the Treasury--he knows how to navigate 'TurboTax!'--or maybe the EPA Administrator, or maybe the Secretary of The Interior, or maybe--if owe-bamaKare makes it through The Supreme Court--Secretary of Health and Human Services.  Any of these would be far better than anyone in the current owe-bama Regime!!  As expected, the national pamphleteer 'corpse' is labelling New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as a racist for his 'sitting on the couch' comment.  I contend the national pamphleteer 'corpse' are racists for their suggestion that most welfareRATs are negro, minorities; something New Jersey Governor Chris Christie DID NOT EVEN SUGGEST!!
The "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist's" 'Buffett Rule' allegedly speaks to his 'paying-their-fair-share' principle.  Not So!!!  This tax policy--if foolishly passed by the Congress--is nothing more than thinly-veiled wealth re-distribution by a control-freak!!   If 'paying-their-fair-share' were truly in the "Clown's" policy construction, why doesn't he call me about my proposal:
"No representation without taxation,"
a take-off on our Forefathers' 'No taxation without representation' chant directed at King George III, of Great Britain.  Those among us who are--to quote New Jersey Governor Chris Christie--"sitting on the couch waiting for the next government check," are the very ones NOT 'paying-their-fair-share,' and yet--as a voting block--have sufficient numbers to force the re-immaculation of our exalted ruler, an Alinsky-esque socio-fascist!!  At the expense of most other voting blocks, "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" is concentrating on the aforementioned welfareRATs as well as the negro voter block.
"Slick-Willie" Clinton had also declared he'd not comment on his successsor's public policy decisions for the usual one-year after leaving office.  As I recall, "Slick" lasted all of about 90 days before initiating pot-shots at President Bush (43) which continued for the full two terms!   Now's the time for President Bush (43) to make his start at carrying on the tradition, weighing in on various ludicrus policies, plans, regulations and decisions of the "Clown Prince."  That probably won't happen; President Bush (43) is far more presidential--out-of-office--than the two aforementioned political miscreants, combined!!  At the very least, President Bush (43) has to get back into 'campaign-mode' to help the Mitt Romney Campaign in any way he can!!  We can rest-assured, "Slick-Willie" and the rest of the 'commie-lib' miscreants will certainly render assistance in keeping the "Clown Prince"--the worst ruler in U.S. history--in office!!
What'cha think?!?

This'n'That; March First #1; owe-bama LITE?!?

Romney Win Reveals Revisions
On Tuesday, 'Mitt' Romney eeked out a win in one of his home states, Michigan and a handy win in Arizona.  The week previous, Mr Romney revised the tax portion of his 59-point economic revival plan.  The unrevised plan would have left most tax rates unchanged and would at some future point, move to a flatter, fairer tax code.
The revised tax plan will accelerate his timetable toward 'fairness.'
Under the new plan:

*Lower the current top rate from 35% to 28%, and
*Reduce the mid-level rate from 25% to 20%, and
*Reduce the lowest rate from 10% to 8%, and
*Eliminate the Alternative Minimum Tax (ATM).

There's a few owe-bamaesque problems with Mr Romney's revised tax plan.  Primary of which is the proposed changes will result to an increase in the over-all deficit by $3.4 TRILLION over-ten-years.
Does 'Mitt' Romney have some newly found 'screws, loose?!?'
Hey.... 'Mitt' baby.... the objective here is to eliminate the failed socio-fascist policies of "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist," NOT enhance them!!
I have a couple of intertwined points that should be considered by all current GOP candidates.  It's a given that the federal welfare system has evolved into a welfareRAT lifestyle; a welfareRAT career path.  The Founding Fathers used--as but one basis for the Declaration of Independence as well as the United States Constitution--the basic premise of "no taxation without representation;" that all men are created equal-NOT: "Some men are created tax-exempt!"
I contend that the aforementioned premise be revised to read: "no representation without taxation."  The United States and all it has to offer to those willing to strive to succeed, is for the benefit of everyone in residence.  Everyone in residence should be made to feel apart of the process, apart of the results; not to be made to feel like a lesser individual, like a second-class citizen.  To that end--to truly feel apart of the process--EVERYONE must have 'skin-in-the-game!'  The average welfareRAT household has two cars, air conditioning, big-screen TVs, game consoles, freezers, more than one charge card; they routinely play the MegaMillion and Power Ball lotteries as well as the purchase of multiple scratch-off tickets.  If said welfareRATs can have and do the things I can rarely afford to have and do, they must be subject to the same income tax code that I'm subjected to!!  I'm suggesting to the various GOP candidates that they consider taxing welfare cash as well as in-kind benefits, albeit at a lesser rate.... of say, 5 to 8%.  This would bring said welfareRATs up to the first-class status of being taxpayers; of being contributors to America's greatness; of being a wagon-puller, not a wagon-rider!!
As it stands today, "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" has forsaken middle class males, middle and upper class women in favor of the 52% of America that are "riding-in-the-wagon," as well as the inevitable labor-union, federal and municipal-union, teachers-union, auto-union and service-union support.  The various union miscreants are free to support whom-ever they wish but it seems patently unfair--if not unconstitutional--that those who don't contribute.... have a say equal to those who're "payin' the freight, here."
"That's my story 'n' I'm stickin' to it!!"

This'n'That; February Twenty-First #1; Their Kinda Group

They Picked 'em; They're Stuck With'em!!
Remember back last October when "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" blusterfully supported the various units of the Occupy Wall Street movement:
"The most important thing we can do right now is those of us in leadership letting people know we understand their struggles and we are on their side, and that we wnat to set up a system in which hard work, responsibility, doing what you are supposed to do, is rewarded."
....while he--INCORRECTLY--compared the 'Occupy....' miscreants to members of the "Tea Party" Movement:
"In some ways, they're not that different from some of the protests that we saw coming from the 'Tea Party.'  Both on the left and the right, I think people feel separated from their government.  They feel that their institutions aren't looking out for them."
....and, in the same ABC News blather opportunity, denegrated the "Tea Party" Movement:
"Those of you who are watching certain news channels where I'm not very popular, and you see folks waving 'tea bags' around, just let me remind them that I'm happy to have a serious conversation about how we are going to cut our health care costs down over the long term, how we are going to stabilize Social Security."
Of course, "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" was joined by his 'arschloch buddies:'
Nancy PORKlosi, rankest owe-bamacRATic House leader
"I support the message to the establishment, whether it's Wall Street or the political establishment and the rest, that change has to happen.  We can not continue in a way this is not relevant to their lives."
John Larson (Ct), 4th rankest owe-bamacRATic in the House
"The silent masses aren't so silent anymore.  They are fighting to give voice to the struggles that everyday Americans are going through.  While I don't condone their every action, I do applaude their standing up for what they believe in."
Dorothy 'Geeze-Louise' McIntosh Rodham Slaughter, (NY) rankest owe-bamacRATic on the House Rules Committee
"Its time for all Americans to pay their fair share.  And I'm so proud to see the Occupy Wall Street movement standing up to this rampant corporate greed and peacefully participating in our democracy."
Raul Grijalva (Az) and Keith Ellison (Mn), apparently not very rank among the owe-bamacRATics (in a joint statement)
"We share the anger and frustration of so many Americans who have seen the enormous toll that an unchecked Wall Street has taken on the overwhelming majority of Americans while benefitting the super wealthy."
The federal fascists' support notwithstanding, I'm sadly disappointed with our (Rochester, N.Y.) 'Occupy....' contingent of miscreants!  Rochester miscreants--at #164--were way down the 'Peaceful(?) Miscreants' Missteps' List of 417--and counting--incidents.   While the nationwide list includes shittin' on police cars, pissin' in public, screwin' in public, masturbatin' in public, child molesters exposing their (Anthony) weiners to children, raping under-age girls, pimping unwilling girls, drug dealing, knifings, shootings, assaults, murders, stealing from local businesses, discouraging the reporting of sexual assaults, miscreants linked to international terrorism, ad infinitum; the Rochester miscreants barely made the list by having 161 miscreants arrested!!!  All-in-all, a fine crowd of miscreants for the owe-bamacRATic socio-fascists to support and defend....
In this presidential campaign season, "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist's" support more-than-likely will come back to bite him in his 'fuzzy, very-light-brown ass!!'  My reasoning here is that George Soros couldn't 'nail down' his choice.  On it's face, the republicRATic side of the season looks like Soros colluded with the republicRATic national hierarchy in selecting Willard Romney as the republicRATic 'annointed one!'  This collusion began to fall apart early on when Newton Gingrich won the South Carolina primary vote.  It's now continuing as Richard Santorum is gaining lots of traction with his conservative message, his non-waffling positions, his understanding of the plight of those Americans most affected by the Soros-"Clown Prince" disasterous actions, rules, regulations, control, out-of-control spending, ad infinitum!!
Mr Santorum has an unwaivering message that verifies his understanding of basic economics as it relates to the American Depression.... the owe-bamageddon!!  Comparison at any level, in any sector, the Santorum message 'stomps owe-bama's ass into a pisshole-in-the-snow,' rhetorically speaking!!  While I--personally--am not completely on-board with Mr Santorum, he's certainly the front-runner in my book!!

What The National Pamphleteers Don't Report:
If Obama Has No Natural Born Citizenship Problem Why Did Congress Try To Fix It?
by Suzanne Eovaldi,
westernjournalism.com
February 6, 2012

Congress made eight different attempts to alter our U.S. Constitution concerning the Natural Born Citizenship Clause according to the apocalyptic video documentary done with research by Senior Pastor Carl Gallups proving they knew Barack Obama lacked presidential eligibility prior to the 2008 election! If there was no problem for Obama why would these people do this? There had never been a question of Natural Born Citizenship in our lifetimes! Why fix what wasn’t broken?
The youtube video goes on to reveal a secret, closed door meeting was held with eight Supreme Court Justices just prior to the January 2009 Inauguration that sent our other courts an unspoken message to don’t go there. Plaintiff attorneys with cases were pending at the time were not allowed into this meeting! Only Justice Samuel Allito declined to attend this secret meeting.  Here, as revealed in the Gallups video, are the eight different attempts to amend our Constitution to accommodate Obama’s eligibility questions:
1. On June 11, 2003: House Joint Resolution # 59, introduced by Rep. Vic Snyder (D-AR), failed to obtain a vote; it sought to allow non-natural born U.S. citizens, “but who have been citizens of the U.S. for at least 35 years,” to serve as President or Vice President.
2. On Sept. 3, 2003: Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) introduced HJR#67 which [....]

Thanks A Lot Georgia, For Shredding Our Constitution
by Nikki Booth,
westernjournalism.com
February 4, 2012
On Friday, February 3, 2012 the death knell of America the Beautiful tolled across the fifty states and around the world. An administrative judge in the state of Georgia rewrote the Constitution and ruled in favor of putative president Barack Hussein Obama declaring him a Natural Born Citizen and eligible to be on their state ballot.  Our rule of law is no more. Our Constitution is no more. Obama, Soros, state media, activist judges and all the ‘powers that be’ of a New World Order sealed our fate. The United States is a land of liberty no more.
When Georgia State Judge Michael M. Malihi released his shocking ruling we were stunned. This couldn’t possibly be true. On the eve of the hearing Obama’s lawyers had written a thinly- veiled threat letter to Brian Kemp, GA Secretary of State, demanding that Kemp stop Judge Malahi from moving forward with the three lawsuits challenging Obama’s eligibility to be on the state ballot. This letter followed another sent days earlier by Obama’s Atlanta attorney Michael Jablonski to Judge Malihi demanding he stop the January 26th hearing and advised the GA judge that Obama would not be attending anyway citing it would interfere with the president’s duties. Malihi replied quickly to the first letter: the hearing would go on. SOS Kemp responded within 2 hours of receiving his letter stating, “…if you and your client choose to suspend your participation in the OSAH proceedings, please understand that you do so at your own peril.”
At the very least when Obama or his lawyers failed to show up in court a default judgement, earlier considered by the judge, should have denied Obama’s [....]

Georgia’s Obama Eligibility Decision: Legally Incorrect And Ethically Indefensible
by Doug Book,
westernjournalism.com
February 9, 2012

On February 3rd a much anticipated decision was issued by Georgia Administrative Judge Michael Malihi, recommending that Secretary of State Brian Kemp allow Barack Hussein Obama to appear on the state ballot as a candidate for President.  Given previous rulings by Judge Malihi in the Obama case, many had assumed things might go badly for the acting president. Yet the judge’s 10 page decision could hardly have done more to accommodate defendant Obama and his attorney, especially in light of their having ignored court orders, subpoenas and the hearing itself.  And many of those who have reviewed Judge Malihi’s decision find it to be supported by neither fact nor law.  Of the statements made by the judge in his decision, the following are among the most objectionable to legal observers:
1.) “This decision is entirely based on the law, as well as the evidence and legal arguments presented at the hearing.” (page 3)  In actuality there was NO evidence “presented at the hearing,” in response [....]

by Doug Book,

February 10, 2012
Though Georgia Administrative Judge Michael Malihi claimed to have issued a decision based upon “the law as well as the evidence,” we now know he made proper use of neither. For the Judge had no evidence in the Court record upon which to base his assertion of “fact” that Obama “was born in the United States.” And the Indiana Appeals Court decision to which Judge Malihi looked for his ONLY guidance made a thoroughly incorrect interpretation of existing case law.  In short,
Judge Malihi’s decision wouldn’t pass muster in a first year law school classroom.
“The court can only rest its finding of fact on evidence that is part of the court record.” This is a rule of evidence of the superior court as stated by Attorney Mario Apuzzo. Yet only plaintiff’s evidence was [....]

Afghanistan: Moving Toward a Distant Endgame
by George Friedman,
STRATFOR.com
February 7, 2012

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta suggested last week that the United States could wrap up combat operations in Afghanistan by the end of 2013, well before the longstanding 2014 deadline when full control is to be ceded to Kabul. Troops would remain in Afghanistan until 2014, as agreed upon at the 2010 Lisbon Summit, and would be engaged in two roles until at least 2014 and perhaps even later. One role would be continuing the training of Afghan security forces. The other would involve special operations troops carrying out capture or kill operations against high-value targets.
Along with this announcement, the White House gave The New York Times some details on negotiations that have been under way with the Taliban. According to the Times, Mullah Mohammad Omar, the senior-most leader of the Afghan Taliban, last summer made overtures to the White House offering negotiations. An intermediary claiming to speak for Mullah Omar delivered the proposal, an unsigned document purportedly from Mullah Omar that could not be established as authentic. The letter demanded the release of some Taliban prisoners before any talks. In spite of the ambiguities, which included a recent public denial by the Taliban that the offer came from Mullah Omar, U.S. officials, obviously acting on other intelligence, regarded the proposal as both authentic and representative of the views of the Taliban leadership and, in all likelihood, those of Mullah Omar, too.
The idea of negotiating with the Taliban is not new. Talks, as distinct from negotiations, in which specific terms are hammered out, have gone on for some time now. Several previous attempts have ended in failure, including one instance when the supposed representative proved to be a fraud. However, according to the Times report, the negotiations took on a degree of specificity last summer. They began in November 2010, initiated by a man named Tayyab Agha, who claimed to speak for Mullah Omar. The administration of U.S. President Barack Obama regards authenticating the present offer as unimportant and the intermediary as having authority; the question on the table is the release of Taliban captives as a token of American seriousness.  The Taliban see themselves as already having made a major concession. Their original demand was the complete withdrawal of Western forces from Afghanistan as a precondition for negotiations. The talks have [....]

Was Lincoln the Father of Big Government?
by Julia Shaw
heritage.org
February 10, 2011

On February 12, America will celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s 202nd birthday, but will conservatives celebrate his legacy? Lincoln is a pivotal figure in American history, yet some conservatives are wary of him. Lincoln, the Left proclaims and the Right fears, is the father of big government.
Conservatives shouldn’t be fooled. If big government means a permanently large and growing federal budget and a vast civil service (see William Voegeli’s Never Enough: America’s Limitless Welfare State), then Lincoln may deny paternity for both. As Allen Guelzo explains, while the federal budget indeed ballooned to meet the cost of the Civil War (from $63.2 million in 1860 to $1.29 billion in 1865), it shrank once the war ended (back to $293 million by 1870). “If Lincoln had plans to create ‘big government,’” Guelzo concludes, “none of his successors seems to have known what they were.” Similarly, while the federal government employed more people during the war, the number shrank once the war ended.
In reality, big government is a Progressive invention, designed by Progressive thinkers such as Herbert Croly and John Dewey and perpetrated by Progressive presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. These men embraced big government, because they held certain principles opposed to the limited government framework set forth in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution.  By contrast, Lincoln held a different set of premises. He defended the Constitution and “never had a feeling politically that did not spring from the sentiments embodied in the Declaration of Independence.” To understand Lincoln, therefore, we must turn to the documents he held so dear.
When Lincoln contemplated the Declaration of Independence, Ralph Lerner explains in his essay Lincoln’s Declaration—and Ours, “he saw not one document but two.” First was the “merely revolutionary document” that enumerated the crown’s violations in order to justify to the world the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. The second was the more permanent aspect of the Declaration—“an abstract truth to the effect that all men are created equal.” Human equality would serve as the great foundational principle of America. It was this abstract truth that would carry the Declaration throughout time and guide Lincoln and later statesmen through the precarious situations of the day.  The Constitution complements the Declaration of Independence. Lincoln described the Declaration as an apple of gold while the “Union, and the Constitution, are the picture of silver, subsequently framed around [the apple]. The picture was made, not to conceal, [....]

Obama is Big Brother's Keeper
by John Ransom
Townhall.com
Febraury 8, 2012
It’s hard to believe that Obama falls to his knees for anyone, but apparently he does. As long as they aren't Catholic.  But no, it’s not God either that he prays to. God, too is catholic, with a small "C.".
It’s just a room with 3,000 National Prayer Breakfast attendees.
God isn’t voting in the upcoming, but the attendees are. So painfully, creakily, Obama gets on bended knee looking for votes through- not contrition or remission of sins- but rather through defiance and indulgence.  And Obama has some sins he must confess after his assault on the Catholic Church’s policy of not providing contraceptive benefits to their employees.  "Obama avoided mention in his prayer breakfast remarks of his administration's new rule requiring religiously affiliated non-profit groups to provide birth control to women," reports Reuters, "a decision that spurred fury from social conservatives and the Catholic Church."  For the Church it’s a matter of faith; faith in God that apparently is supposed to be protected under the constitution that Obama swears he’ll uphold.
Writes Bishop Timothy M. Dolan:
Scarcely two weeks ago, in its Hosanna-Tabor decision upholding the right of churches to make ministerial hiring decisions, the Supreme Court unanimously and enthusiastically reaffirmed these longstanding and foundational principles of religious freedom. The court made clear that they include the right of religious institutions to control their internal affairs.  Yet the Obama administration has veered in the opposite direction. It has refused to exempt religious institutions that serve the common good—including Catholic schools, charities and hospitals—from its sweeping new health-care mandate that requires employers to purchase contraception, including abortion-producing drugs, and sterilization coverage for their employees.

Mexico's Presidential Election and the Cartel War
by Scott Stewart,
STRATFOR.com
February 9, 2012

Mexico will hold its presidential election July 1 against the backdrop of a protracted war against criminal cartels in the country. Former President Vicente Fox of the National Action Party (PAN) launched that struggle; his successor, Felipe Calderon, also of the PAN, greatly expanded it. While many Mexicans apparently support action against the cartels, the Calderon government has come under much criticism for its pursuit of the cartels, contributing to Calderon's low popularity at the moment. The PAN is widely expected to lose in July to the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which controlled the Mexican presidency for most of the 20th century until Fox's victory in 2000. According to polls, the PAN has lost credibility among many Mexican voters, many of whom also once again view the PRI as a viable alternative.
In our effort to track Mexico's criminal cartels and to help our readers understand the dynamics that shape the violence in Mexico, Stratfor talks to a variety of people, including Mexican and U.S. government officials, journalists, business owners, taxi drivers and street vendors. At present, many of these contacts are saying that the Calderon administration could attempt to pull off some sort of last-minute political coup (in U.S. political parlance, an "October surprise") to boost the PAN's popularity so it can retain the presidency.  The potential election ploy most often discussed is the capture of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, who is widely believed to be the richest, most powerful drug trafficker anywhere. The reasoning goes that if the government could catch Guzman, Calderon's (and hence the PAN's) popularity would soar.  Still, very real questions exist about whether such an operation really would give the PAN the boost it needs to retain the presidency, however. North of the border, the re-election of U.S. President Barack Obama has not been guaranteed by the May 2011 death of Osama bin Laden. Political considerations aside, the factors that have helped Guzman avoid capture thus far are the very same factors that inhibit the Mexican government's ability to capture him. While we don't put a lot of stock in these rumors of an election surprise, we do see them as a good reason to examine the factors that have protected Guzman.
Plata o Plomo
As we noted in our annual cartel report, Mexico's cartels have begun to form into two major groupings around the two most powerful cartels, the Sinaloa cartel and Los Zetas. These two cartels approach business quite differently. The common Mexican cartel expression "plata o plomo" (literally translated as "silver or lead," the Spanish phrase signifying that a cartel will force one's cooperation with either a bribe or a bullet) illustrates the different modes of operation of the two hegemonic cartels.

Is Obama Really In Good Shape For Re-election?
Or Is The Media Lying Again?
Staff Report
exposeobama.com
February 8, 2012    Gallup Polling is caught between what its thousands of interviews say about Barack Obama’s reelection chances and what it longs for the facts to be.  They do their best to hide the truth with suspiciously timed releases and obfuscating language. Nevertheless, embedded in its latest report on voter attitudes,Gallup’s delivers more bad news for Obama. Try as it did to put a happy face on the dangerously low level of “satisfaction” in the electorate, Gallup can’t do much with a 22% rate. Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Ronald Reagan all had more than 41% rates on their way to reelection, but George H.W. Bush was at 22% in 1992 when he lost to Clinton.
Voters’ sentiment on the economy shows more weakness for Obama with 56% saying it is getting worse while just 38% see it getting better. This -25 in Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index compares too favorably to Bush senior’s -31 during June of 1992 to provide any real encouragement for Obama.  Gallup’s attempt to talk up the improvement in the unemployment rate as reported last week (8.3%) runs into a serious problem since for the least two years Gallup has been saying the real rate (8.6%) is higher than being reported. When the underemployed numbers (18.7%) are included things get still worse for Obama.  The current 71% of Americans with economic matters on their minds is reminiscent of Bush senior’s ill-fated reelection campaign 20 years ago.

2013, the Taliban and the U.S. Commitment to Afghanistan
Staff Report (Geopolitical Diary)
STRATFOR.com
February 2, 2012

NATO meetings in Brussels this week had been expected to center on France's recent attempts to shorten its commitment to NATO's mission in Afghanistan (with the important repercussion of the potential for other European allies to follow the French lead). But U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, while en route to Brussels on Wednesday, announced that combat operations in Afghanistan would transition to a "training, advise and assist" role before the end of 2013 -- rather than the long-held 2014 deadline. The shortened time frame Panetta proffered would be consistent with what French President Nicolas Sarkozy now desires. But the mission in Afghanistan does not depend on the presence of the French contingent -- or even on the cumulative contributions of European countries that might follow the French in reducing their commitments. Concern about the durability of the French commitment to the war effort is insufficient to understand Panetta’s announcement.
When in 2001 the Northern Alliance -- supported by American airpower and special operations forces -- seized Kabul, Stratfor argued that the Taliban had not been defeated, but had declined combat on American terms and conceded the capital. Washington’s attention quickly shifted to Iraq. As the war in Iraq intensified and then settled, the war in Afghanistan underwent a significant shift. The old al Qaeda core that orchestrated the 9/11 attacks moved to Pakistan and was increasingly degraded, culminating in the 2011 death of Osama bin Laden. Pursuing that al Qaeda core is what originally motivated the United States to invade Afghanistan. But today, [....]

The Price of Obama's Fairness
by Matt Patterson,
Townhall.com
Feb 11, 2012
President Obama is big on fairness. “Fair” or some variant thereof was mentioned eight times in his State of the Union speech, more than “health care” (twice), his signature legislative accomplishment, or “spending” (three times), the nation’s most pressing problem.  Obama claims, in fact, that the issue of fairness is the “defining issue of our time.” The president gives us a stark, if fallacious, choice:
“No challenge is more urgent. No debate is more important. We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules.”

The Church of Obama
by Mark Steyn,
nationalreview.com
February 11, 2012
The president has issued his own Act of Supremacy.
Announcing his support for Commissar Sebelius’s edicts on contraception, sterilization, and pharmacological abortion, that noted theologian the Most Reverend Al Sharpton explained:
“If we are going to have a separation of church and state, we’re going to have a separation of church and state.”
Thanks for clarifying that.
The church model the young American state wished to separate from was that of the British monarch, who remains to this day supreme governor of the Church of England. This convenient arrangement dates from the 1534 Act of Supremacy. The title of the law gives you the general upshot, but, just in case you’re a bit slow on the uptake, the text proclaims “the King’s Majesty justly and rightfully is and ought to be the supreme head of the Church of England.” That’s to say, the sovereign is “the only supreme head on earth of the Church” and he shall enjoy “all honors, dignities, pre-eminences, jurisdictions, privileges, authorities, immunities, profits, and commodities to the said dignity,” not to mention His Majesty “shall have full power and authority from time to time to visit, repress, redress, record, order, correct, restrain, and amend all such errors, heresies, abuses, offenses, contempts, and enormities, whatsoever they be.”
Welcome to Obamacare.
The president of the United States has decided to go Henry VIII on the Church’s medieval ass. Whatever religious institutions might profess to believe in the matter of “women’s health,” their pre-eminences, jurisdictions, privileges, authorities, and immunities are now subordinate to a one-and-only supreme head on earth determined to repress, redress, restrain, and amend their heresies. One wouldn’t wish to overextend the analogy: For one thing,  [....]

Catholic Bishops: Don’t Revise, Rescind
by George Weigel,
nationalreview.com
February 11, 2012
Saturday morning’s Washington Post headline and first sub-headline, page one and above-the-fold, nicely captured the confusions that prevailed as of 6 p.m. Friday, in the matter of tweaks to the “contraceptive mandate” issued by the Obama administration’s Department of Health and Human Services: “Obama shifts on birth control / Catholic leaders open to plan.”
Well, no, and no.
The administration “shifted” on nothing. It simply decreed that insurers, not employers, must provide “preventive services” (including sterilization and abortifacient drugs), a shell game that has been variously and accurately described as a “fraud” (Andrew McCarthy, in the Corner) and an “absurdity” (the Wall Street Journal). More to the point, as Yuval Levin pointed out shortly after President Obama and HHS Secretary Sebelius announced their “accommodation,” the newly tweaked regulations “would not actually change the moral circumstances at issue in any way.”
Later in the day, on the PBS News Hour, Ray Suarez confronted Secretary Sebelius with the obvious: Someone was going to pay for the contraceptives provided, and who, if not those who purchased the insurance that had to include these “preventive services?” The secretary then took the absurdity to a new level by claiming that none of this would cost anyone anything, as there was empirical evidence showing that readily available contraception lowered the overall costs to the health-care system by reducing the rate of pregnancy. All of which was, on a much graver matter, reminiscent of an old WPA poster-turned-postcard that I recently saw at the Grand Canyon, which extolled Grand Canyon National Park as “A Free Government Service.”
Right.
The question on some minds as of 6 p.m. Friday night, though, was whether the Catholic bishops, who had taken the point in opposing the HHS mandate since its announcement on January 20, grasped that they had been played for fools by the administration. A rather anodyne initial reaction from the [....]

Super PAC-Men: Obama Bundlers Gone Wild!
by Michelle Malkin,

February 08, 2012
The White House didn't blow a dog whistle for deep-pocketed liberal donors on Monday. No, the administration whipped out a supersized vuvuzela. Blaring message: Let loose the campaign finance-bundling hounds of super PAC war!  President Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, who served as White House deputy chief of staff for operations before assuming 2012 re-election duties, announced the super PAC super-flip-flop in a mass e-mail to supporters and a blog post published on the left-wing Huffington Post website. In a related conference call to major campaign finance bundlers, Messina encouraged these high-dollar donors to start funding Priorities USA Action. That's the Democratic super PAC founded by former White House staffers Bill Burton and Sean Sweeney.
Super PACs and campaigns are barred from coordinating with each other. Nevertheless, Messina said that "senior campaign officials as well as some White House and Cabinet officials will attend and speak at Priorities USA fundraising events." Of course, they "won't be soliciting contributions." Wink-wink, nudge-nudge.  This brazen about-face for [....]

Senate redistricting plan causing concern
by Jill Terreri, Staff Writer
democratandchronicle.com

February 7, 2012
The state redistricting commission plans a public hearing on the proposed district lines at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 15 in the legislature chambers on the fourth floor of the Monroe County Office Building, 39 W. Main St.
For a state legislator, representing a region's largest employer is usually a good thing, especially when it means being able to appear at groundbreakings and job creation announcements.  But in Monroe County, the University of Rochester, regarded as a bright spot in the local economy, has been drawn into a Senate district based 70 miles away. If proposed district lines are enacted, it will be a Buffalo-area senator who will represent the university and its medical center.
"It takes our largest employer and gives it to a senator who lives in Amherst, who may be a very nice gentleman but is (in) no position to represent the communities of interest that are here," said Mayor Thomas Richards.
Under the proposal, a large part of Rochester, including the 19th Ward and the Greater Rochester International Airport, would [....]

Why Reagan Succeeded
by Jim Miller,
nationalreview.com
February 11, 2012

Today’s candidates could learn much from him.
"Ronaldus-Magnus" and Nancy campaign in Columbia, S.C., October 10, 1980
Ronald Reagan was the best president in our lifetime. This is no empty boast: Last year, Gallup asked Americans whom they consider the greatest president. Ronald Reagan came in first, followed by Abraham Lincoln — the same result as two years earlier. In the words of Dame Margaret Thatcher, “Ronald Reagan won the Cold War without firing a shot.” In addition, he put the economy on its longest peacetime expansion in U.S. history and restored America’s faith in itself.
How did Ronald Reagan do all this?
What were the characteristics of the man that led to such success? There were several, they were inter-woven, and all were important.
First was his humility. When speaking about public issues, the context was not “I,” it was “we,” as in “We the People.” In dealing with the press and with others, he was always polite and accommodating. With the public he was approachable and engaging. He never viewed the presidency as “his”: He always thought of his having the honor of serving the American people for a short time, then returning to private life.
A second reason for President Reagan’s success was his enary [....]

This'n'That; February Sixth #1; Who Can....?!?

Which Candidate Is Most Capable?!?
A given truism: "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" has proven time-and-again over the past three-plus years that neither is he up to the task of righting the American economy, nor is he adept at finding those advisors whose advice will point the country in the right direction!!  As most of my blogs state: at any given moment, in any populated room "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" is the least experienced amongst said population.
At the end of January, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released it's projections covering the years 2012 through 2022.  If we continue along the same path--with the same 'players'--a dismal future, indeed!!  "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" has the country facing a deficit exceeding $1.1 TRILLION for 2012 and about the same level each year of the ten-year projection.
The onus--dear friends--is on you and I to determine the most electable GOP candidate best equipped to manage the budget, reduce spending and bring the deficit under control.  Given the vast divergence of the three possible contestants, the act-of-choosing--as well as the resultant choice--will be of gargantuan importance!!
Willard Mitt Romney
*Mr Romney was offered and subsequently accepted the position of President and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games of 2002.  Mr Romney's crowning achievement as the olympic chief was the reversal of a $379 Million projected loss into a $100 Million profit.  (Not only did Mr and Mrs Romney donate $1 Million in personal funds to the olympics, Mr Romney donated the entirety of his $1.4 Million in salary and severance payments to charity.)
*As 'Candidate Romney,' he ran for the governorship of Massachusetts as a self-proclaimed 'moderate with progressive views.'  As Governor of Massachusetts, Governor Romney was faced with a democRATically controlled legislature.
*In the business world, Mitt Romney went into consultancy after graduation from Harvard--both the business and law schools--initally working for Boston Consulting Group (BCG).  He was then lured to Bain and CompanyBain was initially organized by former employees of BCG.  Mr Romney left Bain and Company to co-found Bain Capital in 1984.  Mr Romney's early successes were the formation of Staples, Inc., and the Sports Authority as well as turning around Domino's Pizza.
Newton "NewtGingrich:
Newt--finally, after his third campaign--was elected to the U.S. House, taking office on January 3, 1979 and continued to be re-elected until he left his House seat (at other republicRATics' request) in January 3, 1999.   Newt's notable--and not-so-notable--accomplishments were the formation of the Congressional Military Reform Caucus (MRC-1981), the Congressional Space and Aviation Caucus (ASC-1981), the Conservative Opportunity Society (COS-1983).  While Mr Gingrich claims to be--and is viewed as the author of--the "Contract With America," the plan was actually authored by allegedly conservative economist Larry Hunter with lots of help from the Heritage Foundation, Representatives Gingrich, Robert Walker, Dick Armey, Bill Paxon, Tom DeLay, John Boehner as well as several principles from "Ronaldus-Magnus'" 1985 State of the Union Address.
During most of his Congressional career, Mr Gingrich is viewed as a 'whiney-ass,' invariably ready to roll-over-and-play-dead to complete a personal objective, regardless of the affects on the American citizen; the American taxpayer.  While revealing and complaining about the House Banking Scandal , Gingrich was a lesser-participant--22 kited-checks including paying his taxes: IRS $9,463.00--compared with the worst violators: Rep Robinson (Ar,d) 996 kited checks; Rep Mrazek (NY-d) 990 kited checks!
Newt Gingrich--so far as I can find--has never worked for wages in a private sector business as did Mr Romney and Mr Paul.  Before and after his stint in the House of Representatives, Mr Gingrich was either in acedemia or in public policy and consultancy positions.  Most recently, Mr Gingrich was noted for his fiery responses to the national media debate moderators.  These actions seem entirely for 'public consumption,' and Gingrich would never 'take-it-to' "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" in a presidential debate!!
Richard J. "RickSantorum:
A career politician and lawyer, Mr Santorum thus far, has spent 4 years in the U.S. House and 12 years in the U.S. Senate.  During his federal tenure, he has been 'all-over-the-map' in political philosophy; from prohibiting employers from permanently replacing striking workers to exposing members of Congress involved in the House Banking ScandalMr Santorum has been accused of pandering to various ideological positions such as zionist organizations with his 'ideologocal diversity' which has been described as 'policing thought.'  Although never proven, it's been alleged Rick Santorum was involved in the 'K-Street Project.'  The 'project' involved demanding Washington lobbyists hire republicRATics for high-level positions and rewarding GOP lobbyists with access to high level republicRATic politicians.  As a debater 'Rick' can be proud of standing on his positions within the debated topics, rather than descending into name-calling and quasi-defamation.
Rick Santorum's private sector employment has been as a lawyer.  Most of his non-federal employment has been in the state and regional political arena.
Ronald E. "Ron" Paul:
In August 2012 (and on his improbable inauguration), Mr Paul will be 77 years old, plenty 'seasoned' for the U. S. presidency.  Never has an individual in his seventies been inaugurated president; "Ronaldus-Magnus" being the current oldest president at his first inauguration at 69 years, 11 months.  In comparison, "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist"--in all his shining inexperience--was 47 years, 5 months at his first, last and only inauguration!
Mr Paul was educated in Pennsylvania, achieving a B.S. in biology as well as Duke University, School of Medicine, earning his medical degree in 1961.  Much to his credit, Ron Paul has refused to sign up for an entitled government pension, saying it would be 'hypocritical and immoral.'  During Mr Paul's 22-year tenure, he's sponsored 468+ pieces of legislation.  If the entire Congress had the same tenure and the same propensity for saddling the American citizens with ever more loss of independence and liberty, we'd have had 203,580 pieces of legislation!!  Who's to say we haven't had?!?
Ron Paul has not faired well during the 2012 GOP presidential nomination campaign.  He--in some races--scores fairly well, but not with the voter percentages needed to continue to be a viable candidate.  He gains voter support with his libertarian and foreign policy views; he fails to gain additional voter support for the same reasons! During the seemingly daily debates, Dr Paul--rather than articulating his opinions on the posed questions--verbally jaunts off on a foreign policy; on a 'bomb-the-Fed' rant!
All-in-all, the daunting task here is to settle on the most conservative, electable candidate who can take-it-to "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" both in any presidential debates and in the general election.  The "Clown Prince" is an excellent speaker when left to his teleprompter.  How would he be if there were an unscripted debate?!?  Will there be an unscripted debate?!?  We have to also realize that all the questions in any debate will be approved by the debaters; no surprises, no actual questions on the problems facing the country, just those to boost the value of either or both competitors.
As I see it, Dr--Representative--Ron Paul is pretty much a 'throw-away' candidate; in the process to drag support away from the one or two viable, electable candidates.
While most staunch conservatives--libertarians--enjoy the fiery discourse between Newt Gingrich, the debate moderator and the other candidates, his polling ups-and-downs garner only moderate net support.  The 'fire' is fun to watch but if nominated, will Mr Gingrich have the same 'fire' in any presidential debates?!?  I think not!!  There's an unwritten rule that no one is to attack "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" on the issues.  It's a given the media will be biased toward the "Clown Prince," so any GOP nominee will have automatically two foes on the debate stage, right from the start.  Said candidate must be prepared to battle both foes!
Mr Santorum seems to have no 'ignition switch;' how and where do we turn him on?!?  He speaks well on most issues, but where's the fire?!?  Where's the passion?!?  I've not seen it before, I'm not seeing it now!!  He tries to give the impression that he's the 'lone outsider' in the crowd.  Nay, Mr Santorum is every bit the insider that all other candidates are!
Mr Romney is a conservative much the same way "Ronaldus-Magnus" was a progressive liberal; neither are or were, Mr Romney is a conservative in voice only; President Reagan NEVER would have been a progressive liberal-in voice or in action!!  As Mr Romney tries to pander to every possible voter in the country, he continues to attempt to justify RomneyKare and has never taken responsibility for increasing the Massachusetts taxpayers' financial obligations relating to said force-fed health care.  In a presidential debate, the first thing "Clown Prince ZERO-bama, the Narcissist" will do is to thank Mr Romney for the basis for--and his consultancy on--owe-bamaKare!!  This immediately takes one arrow from the sparcely populated Romney quiver.  Mr Romney has two degrees; one we are in dire need of: the MBA; the  other we have too many of in government, aleady: juris doctor! I'm beginning to believe 'the fix is in!'  The media and George Soros have chosen our candidate for us and their choice is--wait for it--Mitt Romney!!
We have some hard decisions to make, you and I!

The Sunday 'Report;' 02/05/2012

What The National Pamphleteers Don't Report:
[STRATFOR] Annual Forecast 2012
Staff Report,
STRATFOR.com
January 20, 2012

There are periods when the international system undergoes radical shifts in a short time. The last such period was 1989-1991. During that time, the Soviet empire collapsed. The Japanese economic miracle ended. The Maastricht Treaty creating contemporary Europe was signed. Tiananmen Square defined China as a market economy dominated by an unchallenged Communist Party, and so on. Fundamental components of the international system shifted radically, changing the rules for the next 20 years.
We are in a similar cycle, one that began in 2008 and is still playing out. In this period, the European Union has stopped functioning as it did five years ago and has yet to see its new form defined. China has moved into a difficult social and economic phase, with the global recession severely affecting its export-oriented economy and its products increasingly uncompetitive due to inflation. The U.S. withdrawal from Iraq has created opportunities for an Iranian assertion of power that could change the balance of power in the region. The simultaneous shifts in Europe, China and the Middle East open the door to a new international framework replacing the one created in 1989-1991.
Our forecast for 2012 is framed by the idea that we are in the midst of what we might call a generational shift in the way the world works. The processes are still under way, and we will therefore have to consider the future of Europe, China and the Middle East in some detail before drawing a conclusion. The 2012 forecast is unique in that it is not a forecast for one year in a succession of years, all basically framed by the same realities. Rather, it is a year in which the individual forecasts point to a new generational reality and a redefinition of how the world works.  2012 may not be [....]

3 Ways Facebook Plans to Exploit Users
By Jeff Macke
Breakout
February 2, 2012
In a move hitting the front page of nearly every newspaper in the world, social networking giant Facebook took the first steps toward an initial public offering (IPO) yesterday by filing what's called an S-1 form with the Securities and Exchange Commission.  But folks desperate to buy shares still have to wait at least another three months until before see the company debut on a stock exchange under ticker symbol (FB).  So why all the fuss? Because despite all we think we know about a company that counts a membership equal to more than 10% of the earth's population, Facebook's filing was the first chance for outsiders to see the different ways FB profits from users. A careful read of the S-1 reveals Facebook's plans to make even more money from members using the free service to connect with old friends.  Earlier today my co-host Matt Nesto and I discussed 3 ways Facebook plans to exploit you the user, in order to justify their plans to increase revenues, profit, and valuation. The list may disturb you.
1. Facebook is going to "sell" users for $120 each
According to their filing, Facebook had 850 million Monthly Active Users (MAU) at the end of 2011. From that user base the company generated roughly [....]

Big tax mines that could blow up your return
Missing these tax changes could bring some IRS attention, hefty fines
By Andrea Coombes,
MarketWatch.com
January 25, 2012
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Most people don’t have tax returns as complex as Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich or Barack Obama, but even if you aren’t reporting a Cayman Island account or many millions in S-corp. profits or book sales, there are brand-new pitfalls to watch for as you go to do your 2011 return.
Congress’s relative gridlock last year means there aren’t a slew of complex tax changes to deal with when you file this year — but there are some doozies that may trip up taxpayers.
For instance, thanks to a law passed in 2008, investors now face new rules and a new form for reporting cost basis for stocks sold in 2011. And now that brokers are reporting your cost basis to the IRS, too, it’s all the more crucial that you get it right.  Also, taxpayers with financial assets overseas need to make sure they’re on the right side of new rules, and a new form, for reporting those assets. The penalty for failing to file the new Form 8938 starts at a flat $10,000 and rises [....]

Considering a U.S.-Iranian Deal
by George Friedman
STRATFOR.com

January 24, 2012
Last week, I wrote on the strategic challenge Iran faces in its bid to shape a sphere of influence stretching from western Afghanistan to Beirut on the eastern Mediterranean coast. I also pointed out the limited options available to the United States and other Western powers to counter Iran.  One was increased efforts to block Iranian influence in Syria. The other was to consider a strategy of negotiation with Iran. In the past few days, we have seen hints of both.
Rebel Gains in Syria
The city of Zabadani in southwestern Syria reportedly has fallen into the hands of anti-regime forces. Though the city does not have much tactical value for the rebels, and the regime could well retake it, the event could have real significance. Up to this point, apart from media attention, the resistance to the regime of President Bashar al Assad has not proven particularly effective. It was certainly not able to take and hold territory, which is critical for any insurgency to have significance.  Now that the rebels have taken [....]

Eric Holder's False Testimony Warrants Impeachment
by Editorial Staff,
Investors Business Daily
January 30, 2012

Scandal: For incompetence alone, Attorney General Eric Holder should resign in the wake of the illegal "Fast and Furious" gunrunning scandal. But fresh news that he knew of it and is covering it up warrants impeachment.
In the latest Friday night document dump — news released as to minimize its scandalous impact on the White House — congressional investigators learned that Attorney General Holder knew all along that a gun his Justice Department intentionally let fall into the hands of Mexico's cartels was used to murder U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry on Dec. 15, 2010.
Holder must have known right away because his Deputy Chief of Staff Monty Wilkinson received an email from then-Arizona U.S. Attorney General Dennis Burke telling him just that: "The guns found in the desert near the murder(ed) BP officer connect back to the investigation we were going to talk about — they were AK-47s purchased at a Phoenix gun store."  According to the Daily Caller, the emails also showed that Wilkinson then "alerted" Holder about the killing of the U.S. agent.  Since then, Wilkinson has taken the Fifth in congressional testimony and told investigators, "I don't recall," while the Justice Department on Monday [....]

How Romney Would Rank Among The Richest U.S. Presidents
by William P. Barrett,
Forbes Staff,
forbes.com
January 24, 2012
There’s no question Obama is part of the 1%. His income is way above $350,000, which is generally considered the cut-off.
Mitt Romney
Today’s release of Mitt Romney’ tax return information for 2010 and 2011 makes clear that if he becomes President of the United States, he would be among the richest individuals to hold that office.  But not the richest.
Romney reported adjusted gross income for 2010 of nearly $22 million. Of that, $8 million was interest and dividends. In this current economic environment of low interest rates and minimal dividends, an $8 million haul alone implies assets in the range of $200 million to $250 million. That’s in line with previous estimates and his own candidate’s financial disclosure statement, which lists broad ranges.
George Washington
For our money, George Washington wins hands down. In the largely tax-free environment that characterized colonial America, the Father of His Country was considered one of its richest residents, a product of his shrewd business sense, a marriage to a wealthy widow and several inheritances. He benefited from an older brother’s marriage into a powerful family, while early work as a surveyor helped give him a keen understanding of land.  His Mount Vernon plantation grew to 6,500 acres, and he had other acreage in Virginia and what became West Virginia. Washington ran farms, started businesses and owned lots of slaves. Indeed, in their 1996 book, The Wealthy 100: From Benjamin Franklin to Bill Gates–A Ranking of the Richest Americans, Past and Present, Michael Klepper and Robert Gunther ranked Washington 59th, ahead of later-day moguls like J. Paul Getty, Microsoft cofounder Paul G. Allen and Ronald Perelman. The authors’ ranking methodology used estimated net worth as a percent of the gross national product at the time.  Romney’s millions don’t even earn [....]

[Related Content:] The Net Worth Of The American Presidents: Washington To Obama Infographic: Is Higher Education the Next Big Bubble?
Staff Report,
247wallst.com[Originally Published:]  May 17, 2010
George Washington, the nation’s first President, was also one of the wealthiest men to hold the office. His Virginia plantation, “Mount Vernon,” consisted of five separate farms on 8,000 acres of prime farmland. Washington made significantly more than subsequent presidents: his salary was two percent of the total U.S. budget in 1789.
Our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, was not one of America’s wealthiest - any opportunity to make money after his term of office was cut short. He was born in a log cabin and served as an attorney for 17 years before his presidency. He owned a single-family home in Springfield, Illinois.
Editor’s Note: This article was first published on May 17, 2010. The net worth of any of the Presidents on this list who are no longer living cannot change, except as measured by inflation. The fortune of the presidents who remain living have changed somewhat, but it would be nearly impossible to measure the full effect of that over the last nine months. The value of Bill Clinton’s real estate may have risen. Jimmy Carter’s publishing royalties may have improved. None of these events is likely to have a substantial effect on the rankings.
The Net Worth of America’s Presidents is a study that can be updated from time-time-time, but the figures relative to the passage of a few years will almost certainly never be more than modest.  24/7 Wall St. has examined the finances of all forty-three presidents. This article provides net worth figures for each in 2010 dollars. Because a number of presidents, particularly in the early 19th Century, made and lost huge fortunes in a matter of a few years, the number for each man is based on his net worth at its peak.  In the case of each president we have taken into account hard assets like land, estimated lifetime savings based on work history, inheritance, homes, and money paid for services, which include things as diverse as their salary as Collector of Customs at the Port of New York to membership on Fortune 500 boards. Royalties on books have also been taken into account, along with ownership of companies and yields from family estates.
The net worth of the presidents varies widely. George Washington was worth over half a billion in today’s dollars. Several presidents went bankrupt.  The fortunes of American presidents are tied to the economy in the eras in which they lived. For the first 75 years after Washington’s election, presidents generally made money on land, crops, and commodity speculation. A president who owned hundreds or thousands of acres could lose most or all of his property after a few years of poor crop yields. Wealthy Americans occasionally lost all of their money through land speculation—leveraging the value of one piece of land to buy additional property. Since there was no reliable national banking system and almost no liquidity in the value of private companies, land was the asset likely to provide the greatest yield, if the property yielded enough to support the costs of operating the farm or plantation.
Because there was no central banking system and no commodities regulatory framework, markets were subject to panics.
The panic of 1819 was caused by the deep indebtedness of the federal government and a rapid drop in the price of cotton. The immature banking system was forced to foreclose on many farms. The value of the properties foreclosed upon was often low because land without a landowner meant land without a crop yield.  The panic of 1837 caused a depression that lasted six years. It was triggered by a weak wheat crop, a drop in cotton prices, and a leverage bubble in the value of land created by speculation. These factors caused the US economy to go through a multi-year period of deflation.  The sharp fluctuations in the fortunes of the first 14 presidents were a result of the economic times.
Beginning with Millard Fillmore in 1850, the financial history of the presidency entered a new era. Most presidents were lawyers who [....]

Getting into a good university is not an easy feat. Securing a job upon graduation, in the current economic climate, is not easy too. However, the biggest challenge for most university graduates is paying off their education loan. It may sound preposterous that some have called higher education the next big bubble. Hardly surprising: The sum of student debt stands higher than credit card debt across the United States.
In 2011, Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, venture capitalist and part of Facebook board of directors, warned that higher education was a bubble waiting to burst.  According to Thiel, the imminent higher education bubble bears striking similarities with the precedent technology and housing bubbles. Comparing universities to commercial markets, higher education is a major investment with poor payouts (job crisis) and market failure, leading some to question how much they have overvalued higher education in America.  The higher education bubble may [....]

With the weak job market out there, how are students expected to pay off their loans? Is the next big bubble really about to burst?
Yesterday, we compared the similarities between the imminent higher education bubble and the 2005 housing bubble in the United States. The similarities cannot be denied, and the biggest difference between the two bubbles is that the higher education bubble is growing at a much faster pace.

Mali Besieged by Fighters Fleeing Libya
by Scott Stewart
STRATFOR.com
February 2, 2012

Mali has experienced perhaps the most significant external repercussions from the downfall of the regime of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. Stratfor has discussed the impact of the conflict in Libya on the wider region since international intervention began in March 2011. Instability in Libya due to that country's deep internal fault lines meant that re-establishing a government would prove difficult. As we pointed out, that instability could spread to neighboring countries as weapons and combatants flow outward from Libya.
Reports now indicate that thousands of armed Tuareg tribesmen who previously served in Gadhafi's military have returned home to Mali. The influx of this large number of well-armed and well-trained fighters, led by a former Libyan army colonel, has re-energized the long-simmering Tuareg insurgency against the Malian government. These Tuareg insurgents have formed a new group, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA). In mid-January, they began a military campaign to free three northern regions of Mali from Bamako's control.  The government of Mali has claimed [....]

Media Act As Though Only Republicans Misbehave
by Editorial Staff,
Investors Business Daily
January 30, 2012
Journalism: What's the difference between Republican and Democratic political operatives who end up on the wrong side of the law? In the "unbiased" press, only the Republicans' party ID and connections merit attention.
In a blog post on Publius' Forum this week, Warner Todd Huston noted the glaring difference in how the media treated the recent arrests of Zachary Edwards and Tim Russell.  Edwards, an Iowa Democrat, was charged last week with trying to commit identity theft against Matt Schultz, Iowa's Republican secretary of state, in order to pin unethical or illegal activity on him.  Russell, a Wisconsin Republican, was accused of stealing money intended for relatives of veterans killed in action.
Both are terrible deeds, to be sure. But as Huston notes, only Russell's party affiliation and connections got played up by news reports. Russell, you see, was an aide to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, much-hated by liberals.  The New York Times made this connection clear in its headline, as did Reuters and just about every other story about the arrest.  But when it came to the Edwards arrest in Iowa, press accounts went out of their way to avoid even mentioning that he was a Democrat. The AP dispatch, for example, [....]

Meet Sheryl Sandberg: Facebook's Highest-Paid Employee

Mark Zuckerberg may be the face of Facebook. But Sheryl Sandberg can take much of the credit for the company's success. As chief operating officer -- and the self-described "grownup" in the room -- she was also the highest-paid employee at the social networking site. Her salary and stock awards last year: a cool $30.87 million, putting her on pace to be one of the wealthiest self-made women in the world once the company goes public.
Sandberg, who's second in command at Facebook, is often not just the grownup in the room, but also the only woman, which she finds mind-boggling. As she told an audience at TED in Washington, D.C., "One hundred and ninety heads of state; nine are women. Of all the people in parliament in the world, 13% are women. In the corporate sector, women at the top, C-level jobs, board seats, tops out at 15-16%. The numbers have not moved since 2002 and are going in the wrong direction."  Sandberg, however, is moving in a trajectory that [....]

Polarization and Sustained Violence in Mexico's Cartel War
Staff Report,
STRATFOR.com
January 24, 2012

Editor's Note: In this annual report on Mexico's drug cartels, we assess the most significant developments of 2011 and provide updated profiles of the country's powerful criminal cartels as well as a forecast for 2012. The report is a product of the coverage we maintain through our Mexico Security Memo, quarterly updates and other analyses we produce throughout the year.
As we noted in last year's annual cartel report, Mexico in 2010 bore witness to some 15,273 deaths in connection with the drug trade. The death toll for 2010 surpassed that of any previous year, and in doing so became the deadliest year ever in the country's fight against the cartels. But in the bloody chronology that is Mexico's cartel war, 2010's time at the top may have been short-lived. Despite the Mexican government's efforts to curb cartel-related violence, the death toll for 2011 may have exceeded what had been an unprecedented number.  According to the Mexican government, [....]

[NY] State Assembly considering raising minimum wage
by Andrew Poole
The [Hornell, N.Y.] Evening Tribune
January 31, 2012
Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I- Corning) hasn’t seen a copy of a proposed bill that would increase New York’s minimum wage, but he already has concerns about such an action.  Citing census data stating that almost half of United States citizens have fallen into poverty, Assembly Democrats announced Monday their intention to present legislation that would raise New York’s hourly minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50, according to Associated Press reports.  The increase would also be tied to the rate of inflation, meaning in future years as inflation rises the minimum wage would also increase accordingly.  Palmesano said state minimum wage is tied to the federal wage, and that it would be better continue the same system and allow the market to determine what businesses pay.  The state needs to be careful about increasing minimum wage because it could further hinder growth in a time when businesses are struggling financially due to the economy, added the assemblyman.
“Based on what I’m hearing, I’d have concerns supporting the legislation as is,” he said.
Businesses are already paying steep unemployment rate costs, said Palmesano. If minimum wage rises, other costs, including worker’s compensation, would increase.  The assemblyman was concerned [....]

The Best-Selling Cars of All Time
Staff Report,
247wallst.com
January 26, 2012
The most successful car in history may be the Ford Model T. While other models may have sold more vehicles, Ford managed to sell nearly 17 million cars from 1908 to 1927 — a period when car ownership was rare compared to today. The Model T was so successful that nearly every other best-selling car adopted its formula. The Model T was inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to operate, reliable and built by a large company that had hundreds of dealerships and trained mechanics. The other vehicles on this list, from the VW Passat to the Toyota Corolla, share all of these characteristics. The best-selling cars through history have appealed to a broad buyer base because they are within the reach of the masses.  The best-selling vehicles have several other notable features in common. For one, the majority were introduced just before or around the same time that gas prices began to rise rapidly in the early 1970s, primarily because of [....]

The Invention of the Internet

Unlike technologies such as the light bulb or the telephone, the Internet has no single “inventor.” Instead, it has evolved over time. The Internet got its start in the United States more than 50 years ago as a government weapon in the Cold War. For years, scientists and researchers used it to communicate and share data with one another. Today, we use the Internet for almost everything, and for many people it would be impossible to imagine life without it.

Thousands of federal workers owe back taxes
by Ken Thomas,
Associated Press
finance.yahoo.com
January 27, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has preached that all Americans should pay their fair share in taxes, but a government report finds that tens of thousands of federal employees — from staffers in Congress to federal agencies and even Obama's executive office — collectively owe the government billions in back taxes.  Data from the Internal Revenue Service found that more than 279,000 federal employees and retirees owed $3.4 billion in back income taxes as of Sept. 30, 2010.  The data showed that 467 employees of the House of Representatives, or about 4.2 percent of the workforce, owed more than $8.5 million. In the Senate, 217 employees, or about 3 percent of the workforce, owed $2.13 million.  Obama's staff was not immune, either, with 36 people in Obama's executive office of nearly 1,800 workers — about 2 percent — owing the government $833,970 in back taxes.
Obama used part of his State of the Union address Tuesday night to promote economic fairness, arguing for changes in the tax code that would create a minimum tax rate of at least 30 percent on anyone making more than $1 million. The finances of one of his chief Republican rivals, Mitt Romney, has been scrutinized because he, like many millionaires, pays a lower rate because most of his income came from investments, which are taxed at a lower rate.  The IRS report attracted the attention of Republicans, who said it undercut the president's argument on taxes. "If Obama wants people to pay their 'fair share,' perhaps he should start with his own staff," [....]

Venezuela Prepares as Chavez's Health Deteriorates
Staff Report,
STRATFOR.com
January 25, 2012

According to a report published by Spanish newspaper ABC on Monday and Tuesday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez may only have 9-12 months to live as a result of his decision to prioritize presidential duties over personal health. Chavez's prostate cancer was reportedly discovered in January of 2011, at which point his prognosis was five years. Since that initial diagnosis, Chavez has repeatedly postponed treatments or skipped them altogether in the interests of concealing his illness and protecting his political position.  The leaked report, which ABC says was given to the paper by "intelligence services" (much like a November leak to The Wall Street Journal), is dated Jan. 12 and reviews a medical examination Chavez underwent Dec. 30. According to the report, the South American president needs to undergo a painful, debilitating treatment that, while preventing him from working for more than a month, could extend his lifespan. If he defers the treatment, he will likely to die within the year. According to ABC, when presented with a similar conundrum in November, Chavez chose to stay in Caracas rather than travel to Russia for treatment -- out of fear that the political situation in Venezuela was not secure. We have no way to be completely certain that the report accurately represents Chavez's medical condition, but the tenor of the report matches a series of accounts given to Stratfor and other open sources.
Competition within the Chavista inner circle dominated 2011, as each of Chavez's closest associates sought to take best advantage of the turmoil that ensued when Chavez's bout of illness became public in June. The upcoming October elections have added urgency to this struggle. There is no clear successor to Chavez among the Chavista elite. However, Chavez in recent weeks appointed Diosdado Cabello as first vice president of the Venezuelan United Socialist Party and later named him President of the National Assembly. Clearly, a single faction has taken the lead. Cabello represents the pragmatic, militaristic wing of the Chavista elite. However, although powerful, Cabello is not particularly popular, and he is not likely to be a suitable replacement for Chavez in October.
The most believable political alternative to Chavez may actually come from the Venezuelan opposition. After years of disunity and infighting, the opposition is presenting its most credible challenge to Chavez since he came to office in 1999. Miranda Governor Henrique Capriles Radonski appears most likely to secure the backing of the opposition parties in the Feb. 12 primaries. Capriles has positioned himself as a man of the people, claiming he is the natural heir to Chavismo, but with a pro-business twist.  The most important thing [....]

Update on Global Food Commodities
Staff Report,
STRATFOR.com
January 19, 2012

Summary
Corn, soybeans, rice and wheat are the most important food staples consumed in the world. We monitor these commodities because market fluctuations can lead to domestic unrest in import-reliant countries. Below is an assessment of these vital commodities.
Analysis
Most countries have domestic agricultural industries. However, the majority of these countries do not produce more than what their populations can consume. Only a handful of countries are able to export significant quantities of key food staples to countries that cannot meet their consumption needs or experience temporary setbacks in their agricultural sectors.
Output from exporting countries is an important geopolitical issue. Increased demand for global food supplies can cause localized shortages and price spikes. Food shortages and price increases, in turn, can lead to political turmoil and social unrest in countries whose populations depend on these imports for survival.  The most important staple crops consumed by populations around the world are corn, rice and wheat. Soybeans have also become an important alternative source of protein, particularly in Asian diets. Corn and soybean exports are largely dominated by states in the Western Hemisphere, while global wheat supplies are primarily grown by states in the Northern Hemisphere. Asian states account for the majority of all globally traded rice, but China, the world's largest producer of rice, consumes almost all of the rice it produces.  The following breaks down the current status of each of the four major staple crops. Production forecasts are drawn primarily [....]

CFPB Wields New Powers with Director
by Diane Katz,
Research Report

heritage.org
January 30, 2012
Within hours of Richard Cordray assuming the role of director[1] at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), agency officials began exercising their newly expanded powers. Their immediate target is all manner of “nonbank”[2] financial services used by millions of households. While proponents contend that the new regulations will benefit consumers, the structure of the bureau—its unparalleled power magnified by an absence of accountability—bodes ill for most Americans.
New Director Prompts New Powers
The CFPB became operational on July 21, 2011, but was limited by statute to enforcing existing rules over banks and credit unions (with more than $10 billion in assets) until a director was nominated and confirmed. With Cordray in place on January 4, the bureau immediately launched its supervision of “nonbank” mortgage originators, brokers, and servicers, as well as payday lenders and private education loans, as permitted by statute following confirmation of a director.  The bureau is also now authorized to supervise “larger participants” in other nonbank services. The CFPB has identified six such services for regulation, including debt collection; consumer reporting; prepaid cards; debt relief services; consumer credit; and money transmitting, check cashing, and related activities. The designation of “larger participants” must be finalized by July 21, 2012.  Reflecting the overly broad nature of its powers, the agency may also supervise any nonbank that it deems as posing a “risk” to consumers or engaging in “unfair, deceptive, or abusive” practices. While unfair and deceptive have been defined in other regulatory contexts, the addition of the term abusive, which has not previously been defined in law, grants CFPB officials inordinate discretion.
Regulatory Excess Harms Consumers
There are some bad actors in the nonbank sector (as in all endeavors, including government). But at least 40 million adults benefit from alternative financial services, citing convenience, cost, or ease of qualification for doing so.[3] Contrary to conventional wisdom, there is no “void” of conventional banking in neighborhoods where alternative service providers locate, according to a survey by the Urban Institute.[4]  To the extent that the bureau’s regulatory crackdown constrains [....]

Germany's Role in Europe and the European Debt Crisis
by George Friedman,
STRATFOR.com
January 31, 2012

The German government proposed last week that a European commissioner be appointed to supplant the Greek government. While phrasing the German proposal this way might seem extreme, it is not unreasonable. Under the German proposal, this commissioner would hold power over the Greek national budget and taxation. Since the European Central Bank already controls the Greek currency, the euro, this would effectively transfer control of the Greek government to the European Union, since whoever controls a country's government expenditures, tax rates and monetary policy effectively controls that country. The German proposal therefore would suspend Greek sovereignty and the democratic process as the price of financial aid to Greece.
Though the European Commission rejected the proposal, the concept is far from dead, as it flows directly from the logic of the situation. The Greeks are in the midst of a financial crisis that has made Greece unable to repay money Athens borrowed. Their options are to default on the debt or to negotiate a settlement with their creditors. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Union are managing these negotiations.  Any settlement will have three parts. The first is an agreement by creditors to forego repayment on part of the debt. The second is financial help from the IMF and the European Union to help pay back the remaining debt. The third is an agreement by the Greek government to curtail government spending and increase taxes so that it can avoid future sovereign debt crises and repay at least part of the debt.
Bankruptcy and the Nation State
The Germans don't trust the Greeks to keep any bargain, which is not unreasonable given that the Greeks haven't been willing to enforce past agreements. Given this lack of trust, Germany [....]

Tiny Swiss town builds the world's first solar-powered ski lift
by: Adventure Journal

February 2, 2012    Even though as the crow flies, the postage-stamp town of Tenna, Switzerland, isn't far from historic resorts like St. Moritz and Davos, Tenna is a one-horse town, one-shop, one-school, and one t-bar town. And that t-bar, the only ski lift in the whole valley, was on its last legs. But rather than let it die, locals raised enough money to update it and then went a step further: They built the world's first solar-powered ski lift.  It's more than solar-powered, in fact -- it's a smart investment. The Tenna lift generates 90,000 kilowatt hours a year, or three times the juice needed to run the lift, and the extra power goes back into the grid, which makes money for the town, which can pay residents back.  So what happens to the 82 solar "wings" when it dumps? Not a problem, because they rotate to follow the path of the sun in the sky and can be tilted to perpendicular during a storm, so there's no load and the snow slides right off.  At $1.5 million, the project [....]
